Drawing inspiration from Chubby Checker, James Brown, and cartoons, Boogaloo Sam actualized this new form of movement. In 1977, he founded his own crew, the Electric Boogaloos. Notable moves from the popping genre include the Boogaloo (created by Boogaloo Sam), botting, dime stop, gliding, and popping. Boogaloo Sam's musicality and deep understanding of movement made him an influential figure in early hip-hop on the West Coast, and he continues to dance and teach today.1983: Hip-Hop's First Film, "Wild Style," DebutsThere's a bit of debate over it, but the 1983 classic "Wild Style" is argued to be the first film centered on hip-hop culture. Charlie Ahearn, the film's director, focused on all four elements of the culture: DJing, rapping, graffiti, and break dancing. Ahearn made history by selling out all showings for the three weeks it played in Time Square, according to The Source. The film was low budget and raw, but thoroughly encapsulated the feel of the culture helping expand its reach outside the five boroughs of NYC. Though originally released only in a handful of theaters, "Wild Style" was remastered and released 30 years later for a new generation of hip-hop performers and fans to enjoy.Getty /Michael Ochs Archives | StringerLate '80s and '90s: Club Battles and CompetitionsBy the late '80s and early '90s, hip-hop was gaining more mainstream notoriety, and clubs throughout started to feature DJs in the genre. The incorporation of DJs into the club scene made way for dance competitions to emerge as an organic result. Club attendees would clear out space on the dance floor for different groups to go head-to-head. These impromptu battles eventually led to club promoters highlighting these competitions to get more people into their spaces. The elevation of these competitions enabled hip-hop dancers to stay connected to the genre's original nature of battling. Growth. In 2001, Newell and Sanford management announced plans to gain a market share of 10 percent in the children's coloring market. This was a market long dominated by Crayola, then owned by Hallmark Cards, which controlled some 75 percent of the market share in children's coloring. Sanford launched a new marketing campaign, aiming to grab a bigger portion of this lucrative market. The Parker and Waterman brands represented another area where Sanford could look to increase sales. The brands still had tremendous recognition, and fine writing instruments were beginning to enjoy something of a comeback. Sanford reissued some classic Parker and Waterman pens, such as the famous Parker 51, which had originally come out in 1939 to celebrate Parker's 51st anniversary. This sold well for Sanford, as did limited edition Waterman reissues. Sanford made a concentrated effort to bring its fine pens into distribution at duty-free shops and other so-called travel-retail outlets, where travelers frequently bought writing instruments as gifts. The Rotring brand also attracted the interest of the travel-retail market. Rotring was a German company founded in 1928. It was best known for its Rapidograph drafting pens. These pens with ultra-fine points had been used by artists, architects, and draftsmen for years, but they faded somewhat as computers replaced hand drawing in these fields. Newell acquired the brand in 1998, where it became part of Sanford. The staid, quotidian Sharpie also had something of a surge in the 2000s. Sanford used the brand name to sponsor a Nascar race inWatch this epic drawing come to life! drawing draw drawings
The Atlanta-based Zac Brown Band have grown into a mini-empire since their leader began gigging under that name in 2002. Their take on country music is far-reaching and full of surprises, drawing on traditional Nashville songwriting ideals as effortlessly as cutting-edge pop; their live shows have the epic length of jam-band freakouts and the cross-generational appeal of stadium-rock barnburners; and their extra-musical interests, which include a line of portable speakers and a camp for deserving kids, show their boundless ambition. After growing their fanbase on the road during the 2000s, ZBB broke through in 2008 with “Chicken Fried,” a love song to Southern culture. A slew of country-radio chart-toppers followed, including the laidback “Toes,” the harmony-rich Alan Jackson collab “As She's Walking Away,” and the sun-kissed Jimmy Buffett duet “Knee Deep.” As the 2010s progressed, ZBB dug even deeper into their collective musical knowledge and savvy, recording a 2013 EP with Foo Fighters leader Dave Grohl, duetting with Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, and welcoming electronic artists like Skrillex and Poo Bear into the fold. Nexus: The Kingdom of the Winds (1996) It's important not to overlook Asia's involvement in MMOs in the '90s because when this region started cranking them out, they drew in numbers like never before. Nexus was one of the first significant Korean titles, developed by a certain Jake Song. Yes, that Jake Song. The game had an intricate social system and ran up record concurrencies within the first couple of years of operation.6. Ultima Online (1997) When Ultima Online debuted in 1997, it instantly became the king of the MMO mountain. Drawing from a rich RPG legacy and the hard-working talents of Origin Systems, this sandbox title blew gamers away with the possibilities and options available in an online fantasy realm. Sure, it had problems, not the least of which was the rash of player killing and rampant bugs, but it became the first MMO to garner a truly sizable audience and put this type of game on the radar of both players and the gaming industry.7. Tibia (1997) This German MMO had a slow start in the '90s, but the 2000s saw it explode in popularity and function. While everyone else was making client-based subscription MMOs, the team behind Tibia decided to embrace a free-to-play model and put this 2-D isometric game fully inside a browser. Tibia's still going strong today with thousands (or even hundreds of thousands) playing it.
