I have 2 pcs with Avast anti-virus (free) installed. Today (20 May 2017) Avast failed to update its virus definitions on both pcs. After the auto update failed I tried a manual update of the definitions. It came back with “unknown error”. Existing definitions on my desktop are 18-8, it will not update to the latest, which I think is dated 19 May 2017. Looking in the log of my firewall, the last file to be downloaded is vps32_159c_159b.vpx size 1025042 bytes. I get the same result on my laptop, except as I have not used it for a while the existing definitions are from 12 May 2017.Having tried and failed to auto update and manual update, a further manual update states the definitions are up to date.I looked in the Avast Update log file and the final entry for today’s attempt is:[11:32:12] [error ] [instcont ] [ 3704: 1648] Error returned by Instup, return code 8 (0x00000008) [Not enough storage is available to process this command.][11:32:12] [info ] [instcont ] [ 3704: 1648] 2017/05/20 11:32:12 END: Avast installer/updater, return code 8 (0x00000008) [Not enough storage is available to process this command.][11:32:12] [info ] [instcont ] [ 3704: 1648] –Anyone else having problems? The version of Avast antivirus I am using is 2015.10.2208. Only has auto quarantine these days. McAfee would be fine for anyone who can live with auto quarantine. But the auto quarantine, means that I only use it on my test computer, even though I have a license for it. #15 Not really. Kaspersky, Avast/AVG and many others can be configured to ask before taking an action. #16 Not really. Kaspersky, Avast/AVG and many others can be configured to ask before taking an action. But just about all of them, don't let you whitelist a file when it is detected. #18 @Ludditus I may be wrong, as it's been a while since I used AVG or Avast, but I think it will still auto quarantine some files. It's important to me to be prompted every single time a threat is detected and to have the option to whitelist it. #19 @roger_m I'm not sure they still do that. I've just go back to AVG Free after some years of not using either of Avast/AVG, and so far it always asked first if told so. In my experience, Panda and Bitdefender auto quarantine some files, no matter what they're told to do (i.e. configured to ask first). #20 @Ludditus I guess I should try it again. I asked Avast a few years about prompting before quarantining and they said they wouldn't add it.From memory, you can get Panda's real time protection to prompt you when it finds something, but when running scans, everything gets auto quarantined. However, it may be the other way round, as its been a while since I used Panda.. auto update wont work ok avast pro any idea’s. Avast Community auto update .
