Avast on windows 7.It wont install. Need advice.
January 15, 2011, 8:30am 1 I’m running Avast Free 5.1.889 on Windows 7 Ultimate and suddenly a few days ago after booting up the web shield just turned itself off. The Avast icon in the tray now has a exclamation point that wont go away.I try to turn them back on in the Avast interface but nothing happens. I disabled Windows Defender and uninstalled Malwarebytes with no avail (no other virus protection is installed). Next, I tried to repair but that didn’t work. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling with no luck. I then tried uninstalling and then using the Avast removal tool. After another installation I get the same result (I even tried this in safemode).Maybe a firewall issue? I did try turning off the firewall but nothing seemed to change. Something I’m missing? Any other suggestions? system January 16, 2011, 5:38am 2 Bump. I also wanted to add I’m running 64 bit. Saying "Cant display suggestions? October 5, 2007, 4:50pm 1 I was wondering if there was something i could do to fix this issue, in the pull down menu, the schedule a boot-time scan stays grayed out. and i can’t use it. DavidR October 5, 2007, 4:57pm 2 It is dependant on your OS, it is available for win2k, XP and Vista, bit NOT win9x or winME.What is your OS ? system October 5, 2007, 5:00pm 3 Im running Vista home premium, it’s a clean install, 1 week old. Lisandro October 5, 2007, 5:07pm 4 Hmmm… strange, it should be there. system October 5, 2007, 6:17pm 5 DavidR October 5, 2007, 6:27pm 6 Whilst I don’t use Vista, couldn’t this be a problem with a limited user account not being allowed to initiate a boot-time scan or rather reboot the OS ?Are you running on a limited user account ? essexboy October 5, 2007, 6:32pm 7 Works on my Vista under limited user. DavidR October 5, 2007, 6:49pm 8 Thanks essexboy, I was clutching at straws, I have never seen this in an OS that supports the boot-time scan, weird. igor0 October 5, 2007, 6:52pm 9 It somehow suprises me that it works under a limited user account (I mean, the menu item won’t be grayed, but scheduling the boot-time scan requires writing to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, which is not permitted for ordinary user…).Anyway, back to the original question: the boot-time scan is available on 32bit version of Windows only; are you using Vista 64bit? system October 5, 2007, 7:29pm 10 Im using 64 bit version, well guess i wont be able to run boot-time scans. Will there be an upddate in the future to bring it to 64bit os igor0 October 5, 2007, 8:02pm 11 Well, hopefully yes, but I think it will take a while; some problems have to be solved for that. system October 8, 2007, 12:59pm 12 When I pull up Avast Home splash screen, at the bottom, Avast runs a memory + startup test, before the main Avast program screen comes up. Is this not the boot scan? I am using Win98SE. Thanks. Lisandro October 8, 2007, 1:21pm 13 It’s only available on Windows NT/2k/XP and Vista 32bits versions. Sorry… DavidR October 8, 2007, 1:55pm 14 No this isn’t a boot scan as you are still in windows. It is a scan of processes in memory and files that would normally run on start-up (startup test) but it isn’t a boot-time scan it isn’t available for win9x, winME..
