Say needs to be reexamined.“We’re just hoping that they’ll double-think this. Why not make the nets higher?” Brody said. “And let’s take another look at this antiquated law that protects teams.”MLB didn’t immediately return a message from The Washington Post. Reached by ESPN, the Dodgers said in a statement that the team was “deeply saddened by this tragic accident,” adding that “the matter has been resolved between the Dodgers and the Goldbloom family.” Brody declined to comment on whether a financial settlement had been reached with the baseball team.Almost as long as fans have filed into ballparks, teams have had to contend with protecting the public from hard-hit baseballs and broken shards of bats. In 1879, the Providence Grays were the first team to erect a screen behind home plate to shield fans in a risky area previously called the “slaughter pen,” according to a 2018 piece in the William & Mary Law Review. But it wasn’t until 1913 that courts had to decide whether fans deserved money when injured by a line drive or wayward bat. In that case, a man named S.J. Crane sued the minor league Kansas City Blues after getting nailed with a foul ball several years earlier. But the courts found he had no cause for action because his 50-cent ticket gave him the choice of sitting behind the home-plate screen, and he had decided to sit in an unprotected area instead, according to the William & Mary paper. That reasoning, which scores of other courts later. Health problems in the years following the war: in a 1945 car accident, he injured his knee and sustained another head wound. A few years later Mary broke first her right ankle and then her left in successive skiing accidents. A 1947 car accident left Patrick with a head wound, severely ill and delirious. The doctor in Cuba diagnosed schizophrenia, and sent him for 18 sessions of electroconvulsive therapy.[129]Hemingway sank into depression as his literary friends began to die: in 1939 William Butler Yeats and Ford Madox Ford; in 1940 F. Scott Fitzgerald; in 1941 Sherwood Anderson and James Joyce; in 1946 Gertrude Stein; and the following year in 1947, Max Perkins, Hemingway's long-time Scribner's editor, and friend.[130] During this period, he suffered from severe headaches, high blood pressure, weight problems, and eventually diabetes—much of which was the result of previous accidents and many years of heavy drinking.[131] In January 1946, he began work on The Garden of Eden, finishing 800 pages by June.[note 6][132] During the post-war years, he also began work on a trilogy tentatively titled "The Land", "The Sea" and "The Air", which he wanted to combine in one novel titled The Sea Book. Both projects stalled. Mellow writes that Hemingway's inability to write was "a symptom of his troubles" during these years.[note 7][133]In 1948, Hemingway and Mary traveled to Europe, staying in Venice for several months. While there, Hemingway fell in love with the then 19-year-old Adriana Ivancich. The platonic love affair inspired the novel Across the River and into the Trees, written in Cuba during a time of strife with Mary, and published in 1950 to negative reviews.[134] The following year, furious at the critical reception of Across the River and Into the Trees, Hemingway wrote the draft of The Old Man and the Sea in eight weeks, saying that it was "the best I can write ever for all of my life".[131] Published in September 1952,[135] The Old Man and the Sea became a book-of-the-month selection, made Hemingway an international celebrity, and won the Pulitzer Prize in May 1953. In June, he departed Cuba for his second trip to Africa.[136][137]Hemingway and Mary in Africa before the two plane accidentsIn January 1954 while in Africa, Hemingway was almost fatally injured in successive plane crashes. He had chartered a sightseeing flight over the Belgian Congo as a Christmas present to Mary. On their way to photograph Murchison Falls from the air, the plane struck an abandoned utility pole and was forced into a crash landing. Hemingway sustained injuries to his back and shoulder. Mary sustained broken ribs and went into shock. After a night in the brush, they chartered a boat on the river and arrived in Butiaba, where they were met by a pilot who had been searching for them. He assured them he could fly out, but the landing strip was too rough and the plane exploded in flames. Mary and the pilot escaped through a broken window. Hemingway had to smash his way

Have you ever had a tune pop into your head and then wonder where it came from? Or find yourself singing the same song over and over and over again? The plot of Lisa Tucker's debut novel, THE SONG READER, relies on the premise that those songs are not random, but rather that they have meaning just waiting to be uncovered if we devote some time to thinking about their relevance.Mary Beth Norris has a special talent; her customers claim she is gifted. She can take the songs that are stuck in your head and determine not only what they mean but also why you repeat them. Her younger sister Leeann, the narrator, describes it best: "My sister Mary Beth was a song reader. Song reading was her term for it and she invented the art as far as I know. It was kind of like palm reading, she said, but instead of using hands, she used music to read people's lives --- their music. The songs that were important to them from as far back as they could remember. The ones they turned up loud on their car radios and drove a little faster. The ones they sang in the shower and loved the sound of their own voice. And of course, the songs that always made them cry on that one line one even thought was sad."In their small southern town, Mary Beth has quite a following and makes a meager living from her ability to supplement her job as a waitress. She helps people make sense of their lives. She unearths deep-seeded fears, helps mend broken hearts, and brings families back together again --- all based on reading the lyrics the townsfolk bring to her."Sometimes I thought Mary Beth's gift would bring us everything," said Leeann about her talent. Little did she know that she would bring great pain before great happiness. Engrossing, lyrical and original, THE SONG READER, Mary Beth's tale, proves to be too telling. She uncovers a devastating secret about one of her customers that affects the entire town --- and nearly destroys Mary Beth and Leeann.THE SONG READER is a clever story of family devotion and secrets, by a strong new author. Lisa Tucker is a writer to watch and will no doubt become a household name in the future. Her ups and downs included time with her family in 2008 and an appearance at a Westchester court in 2010 after a DWI arrest. () ()Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s estranged wife, Mary, who battled her husband’s rumored philandering by turning to alcohol and prescription drugs, hanged herself in a barn on their Westchester estate yesterday, sources told The Post. The 52-year-old mother of four — the latest victim of a family dynasty cursed with tragedies — may have taken her own life because she was haunted by her broken marriage, her friends lamented. “She was deeply troubled, abusing alcohol and prescription meds,” a close family friend said. “She had cause. She was used up and tossed away by Bobby. That was awful.” PHOTOS: OTHER KENNEDY FAMILY DEATHSOfficials refused to elaborate on her death and said it would be investigated with the Westchester Medical Examiner’s Office.Bedford police responded at 1:36 p.m. to a report of a “possible unattended death” — meaning there were no witnesses — at the estate. After authorities arrived, they cut her down and tried to revive her. She was found by a housekeeper, ABC News reported.Mary was found “inside an out-building on that property,” police said in a statement. She left behind a note, and none of her children were home at the time, sources said. There are several sheds behind the home — some hold garden tools and another is a falcon house — on a slope leading to a lake. One unidentified source told RadarOnline that Mary “was very depressed and despondent” during a conversation on Monday.“Mary said she was facing financial ruin, with American Express coming after her hard for an outstanding debt, along with several other creditors. In addition, she was concerned that Robert was about to substantially reduce the amount of financial support he gave her and she was terrified she would have to file for bankruptcy and lose her home.”The Kennedy family dealt stoically with the latest in the long line of shocking deaths. “We deeply regret the death of our beloved sister Mary, whose radiant and creative spirit will be sorely missed by those who loved her,” the family said in a statement. “Our heart goes out to her children, who she loved without reservation. We have no further comment at this time.” A grim-faced RFK Jr. showed up at the
