Baldur's Gate 3 has helped the CRPG genre to surge in popularity, with three million extra players enjoying it this side of 2023.According to Michael Douse, director of publishing at Baldur's Gate 3 developer Larian Studios, the number of players who own a CRPG game on Steam has grown exponentially in just a short amount of time. In a tweet, Douse wrote: "Last year, there were 13 million players who owned a game with 'CRPG' as one of its top 10 tags on Steam (effectively, 13 million people owned a CRPG)."Douse continues: "As of this side of 2023, there's now 16 million." That's an increase of three million in just a year - and Baldur's Gate 3 is almost definitely responsible for that. If you head on over to Steam's CRPG page and look at its top sellers, you'll find Baldur's Gate 3 at number one, followed by Larian's other title Divinity: Original Sin 2, as well as the likes of Darkest Dungeon 2, Pathfinder, and Disco Elysium. Than success. This took a lot of the stress out of the game, and instead put the emphasis on immersion and just never knowing what could happen, but having a certainty that no matter what happened you would enjoy it, and that it would likely be funny. Disco Elysium is available on PC, Xbox, Playstation, and Nintendo Switch.Wasteland 3 (August 2020)Wasteland 3 is in many ways what I had hoped Fallout 3 would be, and is considered by many players to be the spiritual successor to the Fallout franchise if it had remained an isometric CRPG. Ripe with dark humor in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, Wasteland 3 is not only fun to play, but it’s hard to put to down. Troubled by a somewhat rocky launch, due to mostly technical issues, the game has since had many patches addressing these things.Wasteland 3 is one of those games that you didn’t know you needed in your life until you play it, and even though it doesn’t have the fantasy setting that most CRPGs have, it still manages to create a game world that is fun to explore. If you’re a fan of CRPGs and can’t seem to find another game to play, I strongly urge you to try Wasteland 3 and see what you think. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Wasteland 3 is available on PC, Xbox One and Playstation 4.Solasta: Crown of the Magister (May 2021)Solasta: Crown of the Magister is a modern CRPG using the 5th edition ruleset and will be one of the first video games ever made to release using this version of Dungeons and Dragons. Solasta: Crown of the Magister was not granted a full license, however, so many of the Subclasses and Races you’ll see in the game are “Homebrew”, meaning they don’t follow the 5th Edition Players Handbook (unlike Baldur’s Gate 3 which does). The game is currently in Early Access, and it feels like a much more faithful adaption of D&D so far than Baldur’s Gate 3 does, though the budget and production value are clearly not as high. Solasta is made by a much smaller development team, and that really shows in the lack of polish the game has. However, Solasta is coming out of Early Access into full release on May 27th of this year, so that is very good news for CRPG fans who are looking to whet their appetites. Solasta: Crown of the Magister is available on PC.Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous (Summer 2021)The last game on our list is Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, which is not a direct sequel to Pathfinder: Kingmaker, but instead another game in the Pathfinder universe that follows the same ruleset. Earlier Assassin's Creed Games But Not Without Promise Skull and Bones, despite its turbulent development and mixed initial reception, stands as a commendable attempt to craft a massive open-world pirate adventure. Set against the lush and exotic backdrop of East Africa and Southeast Asia during the late 17th century — coinciding with the Golden Age of Piracy — the game offers an engaging environment for fans of pirate-themed escapades. While some aspects, particularly the naval combat, have drawn mixed comparisons to Ubisoft's earlier Assassin's Creed titles, Skull & Bones manages to carve its own niche with unique features and mechanics. One standout feature is the ability for players to control and customize entire fleets. Unlike the more singular ship-focused pirate games, players here can construct and personalize multiple vessels, outfitting them with powerful weapons and distinctive decorations, leading to naval battles growing into spectacular, large-scale engagements. Progression is another strength, offering a steady stream of unlockable weapons, ship components, and cosmetic upgrades. With its sprawling, visually stunning open world filled with activities, ongoing content updates, and performance improvements, Skull & Bones continues to evolve. It remains a work in progress, but its growing potential hints at a brighter future, one that may eventually earn it a warmer reception from the pirate gaming community. 5 Pillars Of Eternity 2: Deadfire Ship Combat Is Just A Tiny Component Of This Sprawling, Party-Based CRPG In Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, open-world sea exploration and naval battles serve as a compelling enhancement to the core party-based CRPG experience, adding a layer of freshness and immersion to the sequel. While the naval mechanics don't strive for ultra-realistic combat or cinematic ship engagements, they succeed in evoking the romanticized allure of piracy. The result is a satisfying system that integrates seamlessly into the broader narrative and gameplay. 2:48 Related The Best Open-World Games About Pirates Pirate media is always popular, but there are not that many open-world games about pirates. These are the best open-world pirate games. Naval battles unfold with a tactical, text-based approach, focusing on strategic positioning and resource management rather than flashy action sequences. Players can customize and upgrade their ship, from outfitting weaponry to recruiting crew members. These mechanics strike a balance, being detailed enough to engage players without overwhelming or detracting from the RPG's main storyline. Exploring the vast Deadfire Archipelago enhances the adventure, with numerous islands, events, and encounters waiting to be discovered. 4 Windward A Successful Homage To Sid Meier's Pirates With A Procedural World Map Windward Systems Platform(s) PC Released May 12, 2015 Developer(s) Tasharen Entertainment Windward is essentially an updated version of the classic game, Sid Meier's Pirates, featuring the recognizable top-down view of sailing and offering similar naval combat mechanics, where players need to choose between several cannon types to fulfill certain functions in battle. The game was primarily designed with co-op in mind, but players can enjoy exploring its large procedurally generated world solo as well. Beyond the procedurally generated world, Windward boasts other modern. What is CRPG? There may be more than one meaning of CRPG, so check it out all meanings of CRPG one by one.
