The film's ending theme song is "Stand By Me ~Hitonatsu no Bōken~" (スタンド・バイ・ミー~ひと夏の冒険~, Sutando Bai Mī ~Hitonatsu no Bōken~) by AiM.[7] It was released in the United States on October 6, 2000 as the third part of Digimon: The Movie. While T.K. and Kari visit Mimi in New York City, Wendigomon captures Tai, Matt, Sora, Izzy, Mimi, and Joe. The two enlist Davis, Yolei, Cody, and their Digimon to come to the United States to fight him. On the way, Davis and the others meet Willis, an American DigiDestined partnered with Terriermon. Willis reveals that he had two Digimon partners, the other being Kokomon, who had been corrupted by a virus. During battle, T.K. and Kari's Digimon, Seraphimon and Magnadramon, unlock two golden Digi-eggs for Davis and Willis to use, which Golden Armor Digivolves their partners into Magnamon and Rapidmon. The two defeat Wendigomon, allowing the older DigiDestined to return, and Davis' group returns to Japan. On the way home, Willis finds Kokomon's Digi-egg on the beach. In the Japanese version of the films, Willis only appeared in Digimon Hurricane Touchdown!!/Supreme Evolution!! The Golden Digimentals (the basis for the segment "Present Day") and had no connection to the events depicted Digimon Adventure ("Eight Years Ago") and Children's War Game! ("Four Years Later"). Days of "Data Squad", which made franchise conventions feel perfunctory while emphasizing that season's more distinct elements. "Digimon Tri" showed a similar pattern but maintained enough of a connection to its roots to be an overall worthwhile addition. Now, that connection is threadbare, as the writers treat this franchise as a mere vehicle for the types of stories they actually do want to tell, hence the inclusion of new characters who end up sucking all the oxygen out of the room. With Lui, the latest in this trend, the objectives are not even remotely hidden. This is unequivocally his movie, relegating the characters we actually DO care about to mere window dressing.Clearly, no one thought to take advantage of this new period in the lives of the 02 heroes. No insights into the thought processes behind any key decisions, no building upon promising character points, and scarcely a nod to the memorable quirks from the series. We all know Davis spontaneously decided that his life goal was to start a ramen business, but that hardly justifies about 90% of his dialogue (and his entire dynamic with Veemon) revolving around that one subject. Remember how he often struggled to be taken seriously, nonetheless stepping up to the plate at critical moments? What about his hopeless crush on Kari, which never saw a proper resolution? No mention of Kari and Yolie's rapport, T. K.'s family situation, Kari's vulnerability to darkness, or Ken's gratitude for being accepted by his teammates. Perhaps the only true character point on display is Yolie's romantic interest in Ken, nicely implied in a few understated moments that convey the former's maturation since her younger days. But if anything confirms that Digimon is now on the precipice of death, it's the action. How in the world anyone could conceive, let alone approve, an idea as indefensible as a Digimon project with no proper monster battles is beyond me. It's a catastrophic decision and makes the climax a bold-faced insult after trying our patience with Luri and his baggage. The movie only worsens the sting by teasing us with what could have been. The animation, art style, and music are all impressive, with faithfully recreated evolution sequences and fleeting moments of excitement as the partner digimon travel to the final location. And, thankfully, no new evolution is brought in to steal everyone's thunder. As a fan of Digimon 02, watching "The Beginning" was reminiscent of seeing "The Last Jedi" in theaters. But I would argue that what has been done here is significantly worse than what Rian Johnson did with his infamous Star Wars entry. That movie at least had the courtesy of giving characters we did care about something substantial to. Toei Animation "Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning" begins, like all good "Digimon" stories should, with Maurice Ravel's "Boléro." The track starts playing as a giant Digi-egg appears floating above Tokyo Tower. It quickly starts emitting an electromagnetic pulse that impacts every screen on the planet and declares "May everyone in the world have friends. May they each have a Digimon," in several languages. When the egg hatches, it spells chaos around the world, and it is up to the second-generation DigiDestined to stop it. Except, there's not much in terms of fighting. There are no Dark Masters threatening to destroy the world. Compared to other "Digimon" movies, the action is barely there, but the film still offers a dark and engrossing story that brings "Digimon" to psychological and even body horror territory. It may not be the big "Digimon" event that fans of the emotionally devastating "Last Evolution Kizuna" may be expecting, but it does what "Digimon" always does best. It adds interesting if messy things to the lore, and explores complex and dark themes for a kids' franchise."Last Evolution Kizuna" offered a "Toy Story 3"-style story supercharged with emotions and a sense of finality, which saw the DigiDestined grow up and grow out of the franchise. "Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning" takes a very different approach, showing that some stories don't end but simply evolve. We still see the second-generation DigiDestined grown up and having jobs and adult lives, and some of the best scenes are simply them and their Digimon partners hanging out at Davis' ramen shop, or having a big snowball fight at the end. But they are not the focus. That honor belongs to Lui Ohwada, a kid who reveals he is the first ever DigiDestined, and the first to kill his Digimon partner. Cronenberg meets Digimon Toei Animation Ever since the "Digimon: The Movie" (though technically a segment from a later short film), each "Digimon" movie has introduced a new DigiDestined unrelated to the main characters who become the focus of the story. Lui is the best of these since Willis from the first movie — and has a brief cameo here! Keeping in line with the franchise's tradition of tackling how loneliness and isolation in kids can have rather ominous repercussions later in life, we see that Lui's childhood was one of neglect and abuse. Granted, he is no Ken Ichijouji who tries to conquer the DigiWorld as an emperor, but it still messes him up. So when Lui gets his DigiEgg, he doesn't set out to save the world or go on a grand adventure but is instead just beyond excited to have a friend who cares for him and protects him. Even in the present, Lui makes for a complex and interesting counterpart to the other DigiDestined.
