On any of these 3 fronts.Opening new revenue streamsRunning a 150M-user platform costs a lot of money. It’s no surprise that Discord is building multiple revenue streams, from animated stickers to tickets for virtual events. But the platform’s revenue potential may be much bigger than that, and we’re likely to see Discord testing new sources of income in the future. For example, many users are running paid servers for people interested in specific games or other hobbies. Payments are handled through PayPal and other payment services, with Discord not taking a cut, leaking potential revenue. Discord also integrates with Patreon, Twitch, and more without getting any revenue from these sources either. Going forward, Discord may be able to better leverage these partnerships to profit from payments and integrations made on its platform. Discord is also currently earning distribution fees from game stores. But with thousands of non-gaming communities thriving on the platform, Discord may consider letting non-gaming brands sell a variety of other products in its communities and taking a cut.Growing non-gaming communitiesDiscord will continue expanding its presence beyond gaming communities. The company underwent a major redesign effort in 2020, removing gaming jargon from its homepage and changing its tagline to “Your place to talk and hang out.” The platform is no longer just for gamers: it’s also a home for artists, marketers, gardeners, and many other communities. Discord’s rebranded homepage. Source: DiscordWhat drove the company to rebrand was a survey it conducted in early 2020. When asked, “What’s the biggest misconception about Discord?”, the majority of surveyed users answered, “It’s for gamers.” People were having trouble growing non-gaming communities because the app’s visual appearance and branding were primarily appealing to gamers.Rebranding efforts were hugely successful. As of May 2021, nearly 80% of people now use Discord for non-gaming purposes, up from 30% in late 2019. The platform no longer depends on a single niche audience to thrive, but is serving a diverse user base. This makes Discord less vulnerable to competitors that appeal solely to gamers. The company is likely to continue expanding and attracting ever more diverse communities.Considering a

Even if you do not game online you might be familiar with the Discord platform. This communications hub is used by over a quarter of a billion people worldwide to communicates to their friends via voice, video, or text. You can also join larger communities/servers to talk with other people with similar interests. Although Discord was designed for gaming many communities of people have adopted Discord as a means to share information. This mass adoption has opened up Discord as a good source for digital evidence.Discord is available both on a desktop environment with any variety of operating system choices as well as on both iOS and Android mobile platforms. Each server has a variety of channels that can be joined based on specific topic areas or one can be made for the group that you create. Each individual can join up to 100 servers and you can adjust which of those servers you want notifications on with mentions of you, etc. Each of those servers can have 500,000 users so as you might guess this is a great hub for communications. Servers can be public or private depending on how they were set up. Typically, a public server focuses on a fan of a particular topic that is more common such as Minecraft. Private servers can be focused to know people in a group such as DFIR which has a Discord server.Discord is free and you can do most of the functions without any issues, but there are options to pay that can add new capabilities to your profile. The big draw on a pay account is the improvement to video streaming which is more applicable to the gaming groups. Servers can also get boosts that get bonuses to all the members of the server. So, why does all this matter in digital forensics? With Discord a primary hub of communication for Gen Z it is important to include such information in your investigation. However, investigating Discord can be tricky with the methods it authenticates. Step 1. Get ConsentWith all things cloud-based you need the consent of the user to

Today, I’m talking to Jason Citron, the co-founder and CEO of Discord, the gaming-focused voice and chat app. You might think Discord is just Slack for gamers, but over time, it has become much more important than that, and for a growing mix of mostly young, very online users steeped in gaming culture, fandom, and other niche communities, Discord is fast becoming the hub to their entire online lives. A lot of what we think of as internet culture is happening on Discord. In many ways, Discord represents a significant shift from what we now consider traditional social platforms. It’s not a public-facing network like Facebook or Instagram, and it’s not really a broadcast medium for creators quite like YouTube or TikTok. But it’s also not a forum in the way, say, Reddit is, where you participate in big public threads curated by moderated communities. Instead, as you’ll hear Jason describe it, Discord is a place where you talk and hang out with your friends over shared common interests, whether that’s video games, the AI bot Midjourney, or maybe your favorite anime series. It is a very different kind of interface for the internet.Listen to Decoder, a show hosted by The Verge’s Nilay Patel about big ideas — and other problems. Subscribe here!Jason and I dug into the nuances of how he sees Discord in the landscape of other platforms and how he’s made conscious choices about what he sees as the future of online communication. For Discord, that future is smaller, more intimate, and far from the public eye. We also discussed the inherent tension between the version of Discord that acts as a tool for voice chat and the version of Discord that’s become a social destination mixing public and private in increasingly complex and, at times, legally fraught ways. We also touched on the word “servers” and how it’s played an important role in the kind of IRC-style culture the company was born in and still cultivates. You’ll hear Jason talk about Discord’s evolving business model — unlike Slack, it never went into enterprise software. Instead, it has a consumer subscription service called Nitro and a growing number of other ways it’s exploring making money, including the platform’s very first ads. Jason also revealed why he ultimately decided not to sell his company to Microsoft for a reported $10 billion and also how the post-pandemic slowdown forced the
