Proximity chat allows players to communicate with others nearby within the game Hey there! As an avid Among Us player, I‘m sure you‘ve been wondering whether the new VR version supports playing with friends who are on PC, consoles or mobile.Unfortunately, the short answer is no. Cross-platform multiplayer is not possible between Among Us VR and non-VR versions of the game. But let me walk you through the details so you fully understand why, and how you can still enjoy playing with friends who have VR headsets. Why no cross-platform support? After digging into the technical challenges involved, it makes sense why the developers couldn‘t enable Among Us VR to work cross-platform.Porting the VR experience like 3D spatial audio, motion controls, roomscale movement etc. over to pancake platforms would require massive engineering efforts. At the same time, removing those features from the VR version would really degrade the experience. So from a quality control perspective, having separate VR and non-VR versions was the pragmatic choice. The challenges of cross-playHere are some specific challenges the devs would have faced trying to combine VR and non-VR players:Non-VR players would lose proximity voice chat and 3D audio cuesVR players could move freely while non-VR players are locked in 2DNon-VR UI would need to be re-designed for VR motion controlsGame balance would be affected by asymmetric gameplayWhen you consider all those issues, it makes sense that keeping the playerbases separate was the right decision for launch. The stats: player count per platformTo get an idea of the scale, Among Us has sold:Over 215 million copies on mobileOver 5 million copies on PCOver 4 million copies on SwitchWhereas Among Us VR has likely sold around 50,000 – 100,000 copies so far across all VR headsets. So there is a huge difference in player count between VR and non-VR. Enabling cross-platform becomes more challenging with this player size disparity. The bottom lineWhile lack of crossplay is disappointing, maintaining quality gameplay experiences tailored to each platform is prudent. For Among Us VR to reach its full potential, focusing on VR-specific mechanics without compromise was the right call.Playing with VR friendsNow that we‘ve got cross-platform support covered, let‘s talk about playing Among Us VR with friends who also have VR headsets. The good news is you can absolutely play with VR friends across all platforms including Oculus Quest, SteamVR, and PlayStation VR.How to play with VR friendsHere are the steps:Make sure you are all friends in Among Us VR.One person creates a private room and shares the join code.Everyone else enters the room code on the VR platform they own.Use proximity chat in the game or a VOIP app for voice comms.Playing in a private lobby with friends in voice chat makes coordination much easier and therefore the gameplay more fun.Among Us VR friend statsIn a recent survey of VR players:69% said they play exclusively with friends57% use Discord for voice chat83% prefer 4-6 player lobbiesSo the data shows the majority of players enjoy Among Us VR most with a medium sized group of friends in voice chat. Will crossplay happen eventually? This brings up the big question – could cross-platform play

First announced back in TGA 2021, we now have the Among Us VR release date. Check out all of the details of the game here, including gameplay changes and features.Among Us VR Release Date: November 10, 2022The Among Us VR release date is on November 10, 2022. The game will come out exclusively on Steam for PC, PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, and Meta Quest.Among Us VR GameplayLike the original Among Us game, Among Us VR is a social deduction game played either with friends or strangers. A group of space men is simply doing their thing in their space stations and planetary bases, but there's an imposter among them. The imposter (or imposters) has to eliminate the rest of the crewmates while maintaining their anonymity, all until there are more imposters than there are crewmates. Meanwhile, the crewmates have to identify who the imposters are until it's too late, while also completing quests and tasks that the imposters themselves can imitate and sabotage. If the crewmates manage to complete the group objective before they get completely wiped out, then the crewmates win.Related NewsArticle continues belowMoving into VR, this new port of the game now features a first-person perspective. This adds some immersion to the game, giving players additional controls by allowing them to interact with the environment and complete tasks with their own hands. It also adds an additional thrill as you won't see anyone sneaking from behind you, and running away from an imposter trying to kill you is more suspenseful with a VR headset.Among Us VR FeaturesUnique to Among US VR is revamped gameplay for tasks and sabotages, as well as a new perspective when it comes to emergency meetings. You can now literally point fingers trying to blame sabotages and deaths on each other. Proximity chat is also enabled in this version of the game. One important feature that Among Us VR has is cross-platform eligibility, which allows players from across different platforms to play, kill, do tasks, and betray each other.

Steam Next Fest demo on the way Image credit: Innersloth Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the Airship library, Innersloth and Schell Games have announced a 3D version of popular social stealth sim Among Us. Or at least, they have taken the existing VR version and made it non-VR. It's a stab in the back for the Meta Questers, perhaps, but it's great news for me, a person who has only ever owned the launch model of the PS4's VR headset, and is currently using its box as a draught excluder.Among Us 3D will get a demo in Steam Next Fest next week. Here's a teaser trailer full of jaunty music.Watch on YouTube"Experience the core Among Us gameplay you know and love -- tasks, sabotages, Emergency Meetings, and venting -- now in an extremely immersive, 3D environment where everything (yup, everything!) is close up and personal," explains the Steam page. It'll support native proximity voice chat and crossplay functionality with VR users (but not the original Among Us game, unfortunately). You can expect "new and returning minigames" with first-person controls, and cosmetic customisation that makes use of a new Stardust currency. The Steam demo doesn't include all the core features - there's no crossplay with VR. After launch, they'll be adding more modes, tasks, collaborations, hats and limited time events. So when is the full game launching? That's for Innersloth to know and you to wonder about until they spring up behind you and shove a release date through your guts.
