E85 calc

I’d put the max flywheel HP on gasoline at 1,844, and on E85 at 1,280. That’s using a 0.63 BSFC on the gasoline calc and 0.98 BSFC on the E85 calc. Both are definitely conservative/safe, but you need to be. Hope that helps; let us know if you need further assistance and thanks for choosing Aeromotive!-Brett Clow

My gasoline carb was very well sorted out and I had far less time tuning the E85 carb. In the end, I found E85 to be marginally faster than gasoline and there may be more in my E85 carb. The motor is a 406 sbc that has about 13:1 compression and I thought it would be a cheaper way to run the car than paying the big bucks for race fuel. Also would I be better off, starting the car and breaking it in on race fuel and changing over to E85 afterwards or should I just run the E85 from the get go. I think you have a wider tuning window with E85, the car ran cooler and had a little more torque down low. Our car is turbo'd with 9:1 static compression. If I was to build a shortblock specifically for e85 I'd up the static compression.Bob. What's your range on a full tank compared to when you were using gasoline? Comment Superhero BangShifter Join Date: Oct 2007 Posts: 1052 Re: Dynamic compression for e85 ?Yes, you would loose some range Steve -- probably 20-30% depending on how good your tune up is. I haven't done a lot of long distance driving, but I have driven it on E85 to a race track 65 miles away. I packed 10 gallons of E85 in the trunk and made it back with 10 gallons in the tank. Made roughly 8 quarter mile passes. Now on gasoline, I could make the same trip and get home with 5 gallons in the tank without adding any fuel all night. I haven't done any real accurate mileage testing on E85, but as far as I can tell I went from 12 mpg on gas to 8-10 on E85. I ran two drag weeks on gasoline and my 410 got a pretty reliable 12 mpg. Haven't really gone that far on a steady freeway trip on E85.Comments

2025-04-19The fuel we used tested at 73% ethanol, 27% gas (winter mixture) so it would have been at the "low end" of octane. Steve, yes, E85 is roughly 105 octane using R+M/2. The ethanol content varies seasonally though since the low temp combustability of E85 is not as good as gasoline. It can be hard to start when it's cold outside so they add more gasoline to it in the winter. The more ethanol content the higher the octane rating, with Rocket brand being advertised at 112. In addition to the octane rating, E85 has a evaporative cooling effect that is much greater than gasoline which further contributes to its detonation resistance. Comment Banned Join Date: Nov 2007 Posts: 11805 Re: Dynamic compression for e85 ?Eric are you saying that E85 with a 105 octane rating will have more detonation resistance than race fuel with the same octane rating? Thanks Eric, I thought it was 15% Ethanol.. :P We don't have a mix anything like that available here..Also, with an 85% mix of Ethanol, even though the octane is much higher, is it paying of in power with engines that also use the same cam and comp with gasoline?Reason I ask is because ethanol's specific energy is much less than that of gasoline..I assume that stoich is much richer to make up for the less energy though, right? What is stoich using E85? Originally posted by TubbedCamaro Eric are you saying that E85 with a 105 octane rating will have more detonation resistance than race fuel with the same octane rating? Yes, that is what I am saying. Because the fuel cools the air in the intake. In fact there is an EPA article that has been floating around on the net. Matt Brussard (sp?) is the author and he analyzes testing the EPA did on 100% ethanol in a 19.5:1 four cylinder test mule. The engine ran without detonation with several different tuneup parameters. In my book 19.5:1 compression and small factory cam is pretty darn impressive for a "105 octane" fuel.Steve, yes, you add more fuel to get the correct chemically correct AF mixture. E85 is roughly 9.8:1 stoichiometric compared to 14.7:1 with gasoline. To simplify things for my simple mind I switched to Lambda readings on my LM1 to tune on E85. I found that on gasoline, my engine made best power at approx .85 Lambda while on E85 I made best power at .78 Lambda. I think it has to do with ethanol being oxygenated. As far as power goes, E85 produces similar results as methanol. On my old 410" engine, while naturally aspirated, I went a best of 10.83 @ 122 on gasoline and 10.77 @ 122 on E85. A little more TQ
