How many Conan movies are there?
“Are you tired of streaming movies from your couch, from your kitchen, and from your hand?” That was Conan O’Brien’s very legitimate query for the audience at the Dolby Theatre tonight. As we all know, there’s never been any other way to watch tonight’s nominated films… until now. Introducing CinemaStreams, a building featuring 800 glued-together smartphones that—wait for it—stream the films for you. You don’t even need to hold the screen in your hands! O’Brien introduced the extremely original idea in a sharp bit taking aim at some of the more unfortunate effects of the streaming era. You can even enjoy a tub of unregulated substances—popcorn and candy—while you watch your movies! Martin Scorsese popped up onscreen to endorse the invention (naturally), while a disclaimer noted that the proprietary concept was a “trademark of Conan O’Brien in partnership with the Sackler family and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.” Hosting the Oscars may be a largely thankless job, but O’Brien is up there having a blast and leaning into some of this season’s more all-consuming controversies. Here’s a million dollar idea if he really does want to run with his never-before-seen “building for movies” concept: get a spokesperson to talk about how we come to the building to laugh, to cry, and to care. Nicole Kidman may not have scored a nomination tonight, but this writer has a feeling she’d be more than up to the task.CinemaStreams: A new way to watch movies #Oscars2025 pic.twitter.com/RZRKCh4gt0 — Conan O’Brien (@ConanOBrien) March 3, 2025 TV Series2010–2017TV-141h 30mThe quirky spin on Conan Doyle's iconic sleuth pitches him as a "high-functioning sociopath" in modern-day London. The term "sword and sandal" movie technically refers to a type of Italian cinema that was popular in the mid-20th Century. The movies are set in ancient times, usually ancient Greece or Rome, and often featured American stars of the day. For the purposes of this list, we're expanding the scope to include basically any movie sent in ancient times, especially some of the American blockbusters during and well after that original era. Movies like Gladiator and Ben-Hur, or even The Passion of the Christ. So let's hop on our chariots and go for a ride with this list of the best sword and sandal movies.(Image credit: MGM)Ben-Hur (1959)The Charlton Heston classic Ben-Hur is one of the biggest movies in Hollywood history and it fits the definition of a "sword and sandal" movie perfectly. It was an enormous success when it came out in the 1950s and the epic has remained popular more than half a century after its release.(Image credit: Warner Bros.)Troy (2004)Though it made a ton of money when it was released in 2004, it wasn't until the Director's Cut of Troy was released about three years later that Wolfgang Peterson's full vision succeeded, critically. The first version left out many key elements of the story it was based on, Homer's Iliad. If you're going to watch it, and you should, you should make sure to check out that 2007 cut of the film.(Image credit: Universal Pictures)Conan The Barbarian (1982)1982's Conan The Barbarian is the film you can point to that truly launched Arnold Schwarzenegger's rise to Hollywood superstardom. Though it's just as much a fantasy movie as anything else, there are definitely swords and sandals, so while it's not based on any kind of ancient history or even story, we're keeping on this list because it's so awesome.(Image credit: United Artists)Clash Of The Titans (1981)There is a lot to love about 1981's Clash of the Titans. For starters, there is the amazing cast that includes Laurence Olivier, Maggie Smith, Burgess Meredith, Ursula Andress (the original 'Bond Girl), and Harry Hamlin. Second, though it looks dated today, the stop motion animation looked amazing in its day. There is really little reason to mention the 2010 remake. Stick with the original.(Image credit: Universal International)Spartacus (1960)Decades before Gladiator, there was Spartacus. Like the former, Spartacus is about a gladiator and slave in ancient Rome. Kirk Douglas stars alongside Laurence Olivier Western Culture that it is often taken as fact, despite being written a millennium and a half after the events of the play. The 1953 take on the play, starring Marlon Brando as Marc Antony, is one of the best modern adaptations of the classic and is worth watching for Antony's famous speech alone.(Image credit: Universal Pictures)The Scorpion King (2002)The role of the Scorpion King in The Mummy launched Dwayne Johnson's film career and the sequel, titled simply The Scorpion King, is the origin story of the pre-pyramid Egyptian demigod played by Johnson. The time period is a little too early to be a true sword and sandal movie, but it's so popular, there is no way to leave it off the list.(Image credit: Paramount Pictures)Gladiator IIRidley Scott's long-awaited follow up to 2000's Gladiator finally hit theaters in 2024. Gladiator II isn't on the same level as the first movie, but its epic scope and incredible production design carry the thin plot well enough to make it a worthwhile watch. Like its predecessor, it's not historically accurate in almost any way, but seeing the epic battles in the Roman Coliseum on the big screen is breathtaking.(Image credit: Paramount Pictures)The Ten Commandments (1956)There is no more epic story in Western culture than the Biblical tale of Moses and the Ten Commandments. The movie, starring Charlton Heston as Moses and Yul Brynner as Rameses II, is as epic as the tale itself. It's one of the most popular movies ever made and will likely remain so for many more years, even seven decades after it was made.(Image credit: Columbia Pictures)Jason And The Argonauts (1963)Greek myths and stories have long been a part of Hollywood film making. 1963's Jason And The Argonauts is one of the most popular movies in the genre. Like a couple of other entries on this list, it features some really awesome stop-motion special effects that, for the day, were completely groundbreaking. They look a little cheesy today, when taken at face value, but it's easy to see why the movie was such a spectacle in the early '60s.(Image credit: MGM)Red Sonja (1985)1985's Red Sonja is the third movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan. The star of the movie is the titular Red Sonya, played by Brigitte Nielsen, but it all takes place in the same world as the first two movies. Here's a list of easy tasks: ContributingFeatured articleKogoro pretending to be Hercule Poirot.Kogoro Mouri (毛利 小五郎 Mōri Kogorō?), known as Richard Moore in the FUNimation dub, is a main protagonist of the Detective Conan manga and anime. He is a private detective and Ran Mouri's father. Once a former police detective in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, he retired a few years prior to the timeline to become a full-time private investigator, opening Mouri Detective Agency in Beika Town, which doubles as the Mouri family's home. He currently raises his daughter as a single father, after becoming estranged from his wife Eri Kisaki, a first-class lawyer. While struggling to maintain his agency successful, he reluctantly takes in a shrunken Shinichi Kudo, who presents himself as Conan Edogawa, after Ran's insistence. Conan's presence in the household would however prove useful, as Conan uses his Stun-Gun Wristwatch to solve many cases using Kogoro's voice. He thus becomes famous as the "sleeping Kogoro" and is regularly relied upon by the police whenever there is a case they cannot crack. While Kogoro is a skillful martial artist and marksman, he is, on the other hand, a heavy smoker and a drunkard, and is known for flirting with other women while still being married. His lazy character makes many doubt his actual investigative abilities, but when his close relatives are the ones at stake, he can manage to solve tough cases by himself. Read more...Recently. Higurashi: When They Cry Supernatural Saga Begins To Take Hold Anime has been experimenting with connected universes and huge franchises for decades, but one of the more recent surprises to come along is the Higurashi: When They Cry series. There's still new Higurashi content that's coming out and adding more layers to its unusual world, but many of the foundational series, like the original When They Cry, When They Cry: Kai, and When they Cry: Rei are from the 2000s. They establish an impressive blueprint on how to play with perspective, subvert the audience's expectations, and explore time loop possibilities that are really only becoming mainstream now. 2 Lupin III Vs. Detective Conan Is An Inventive Crossover Effort That Steals The Audience's Hearts There are some fantastic anime properties that have been around for multiple decades, and Lupin III and Detective Conan are both beloved series that dig into the detective and mystery genres. Lupin III vs. Detective Conan started as a feature-length television special that then received a proper cinematic sequel. Some of these pairings can feel soulless, but this dual endeavor effectively captures the voice of both properties and crafts a scenario that feels organic to both of these talents rather than some of the modern crossovers that exist. 1 Gintama Never Falters With Its Hilarious Comedy And Thrilling Drama Many shonen series go on to become long-running sensations that span hundreds, or even thousands, of episodes. It's understood for there to be some drop in quality or repetitive storytelling to occur for these shows, but Gintama is the rare exception of a shonen series that actively gets better across its run of more than 350 episodes. Gintama's run covers the entirety of the 2000s, and it brings forward a new standard of how to mix dramatic serialized episodes with absurdist episodic experiments. Gintama effortlessly balances extreme tones, never phones it in, and consistently pushes the parameters of the medium and anime as an art form.Comments
