IGI2, while we have really tried to keep the tension that was in Project IGI. We have even more beautiful vistas and the terrain is really used to address gameplay issues as well as being something nice to look at! :) I think that Project IGI gave the players a new experience in FPS gaming, as it was this openness in the maps. Yet it managed to keep the focus of the gameplay into smaller areas. This is something I feel hasn¿t been done before, and I'm quite happy with the way that we have managed to do this in IGI2 as well. Action Vault: How does Covert Strike tie in to Project IGI, and what is the main plot or storyline within the new game? Ole Marius Kohmann: IGI2 starts where Project IGI left off. Anya is in the hospital recuperating from the damages she received after Project IGI and Jones is sent of on another mission, which is IGI2. The main plot is that someone has stolen a chip using nano technology from a leading U.S university and you have to find out who they are and what their intentions for using it are. Action Vault: What are the main locations where the action takes place this time? What is the range of different location types in the game, and how will it differ from the gameworlds in other tactical action games? Ole Marius Kohmann: The game is based in a real world setting and takes place across three Campaigns in Russia, Libya and China. Featuring huge outdoor and complex indoor locations in many different styles and terrain types, from wilderness and mountaintops to desert towns and industrial factories. We feel the diversity of playing locations is one of IGI2¿s strongest features. Action Vault: What were the major factors you took into consideration in choosing and designing the game¿s selection of weapons? What new types can players expect to see, and how many are there in total? Ole Marius Kohmann: We wanted to make every gun have its own different feel and use. The weapons from Project IGI are also in IGI2. We have also added several other weapons, to mention a few: Barret (.50 calibre sniper rifle) H&K M1014 shotgun (Semiautomatic) and my favourite, the H&K G11 (a rifle that fires a burst of 3 bullets, where the recoil on the gun comes after the last bullet). In total we have 30 weapons. Action Vault: What are the gameplay functions of David Jones¿ map computer, and how important is this item to the overall gameplay? How is it tied in to the save system, how is this different from the first game, and why did you make. Vermin but have you guys ever kicked around the idea of adding a fighting companion (or team) to help Jones out?A veil of mystery is cloaked around the IGI-organisation, and this is the kind of question we shouldn’t comment on. :)Is multiplayer planned for IGI2: Covert Strike? We asked Mr. Rokling some questions about Innerloop’s first I’m Going In (Project IGI) game and what we should expect from IGI2: Covert Strike. Now on to the interview. Can you tell us some of the challenges involved in making IGI2: Covert Strike a new experience but yet keeping it faithful to the original game? Implementing a save-game feature while retaining the tension that made the first game successful is quite a challenge. Tuning the multiplayer experience is another one.One of the biggest gripes with IGI was the lack of a mid-level save feature. Did this backlash surprise you?AWell, we knew some people would love it and others hate it. Unfortunately, some of the levels got too big and that’s what makes it unfair to the player. Now in the late stages of development, IGI 2: Covert Strike is Innerloop Studios' follow-up to its hit tactical shooter, Project IGI. Taking place soon after, it continues the modern warfare and espionage theme of the original, bringing back key characters in a new, spiraling plot that will take our intrepid hero to three distinctively different locations across the globe, Russia, Libya and China. Revisiting the stealth-based emphasis of its predecessor as well, Covert Strike will find secret operative David Jones having to infiltrate an assortment of locations ranging from military airbases to harbors and secret government installations. An expanded arsenal will be available, from sidearms and machine pistols to assault rifles and missile launchers. However, the opposition forces should be tougher as well, with improved and more complex AI. As its development has moved forward, we grown increasingly eager to learn more, so we were pleased when we were able to arrange our new IGI 2: Covert Strike Interview in which Ole Marius Kohmann, who is responsible for the game¿s multiplayer element, fills us in on what we¿ll be seeing soon in both modes. Action Vault: Let¿s start with a summary of IGI 2: Covert Strike, its key features and your primary goals with respect to the overall game concept. And how do you think of it in terms of its genre or blend? Ole Marius Kohmann: IGI2: Covert Strike is the sequel to our previous game, Project IGI. That was a story-driven game that took place in a huge open terrain. This is returning in IGI2: Covert Strike, except we have focused more on stealth in this release than in the previous game. The addition of squad based-AI, a save system, lots of new weapons and the removal of spawning enemies in single-player, along with a whole new multiplayer game were our goals. We have also been working on the engine ¿ the game is looking even better. We have filled up the terrain with forests; we have a much better palette for the buildings and enemy characters. The game takes influence from several different genres; it¿s a tactical stealth-based FPS with plenty of tension and action ¿ IGI2 is the thinking person¿s shooter. Action Vault: What are the major strengths of Project IGI that you want to retain and build on? What are the major changes and additions you¿re planning and why? Ole Marius Kohmann: We have been working on fixing the main problems we had with Project IGI, like terrain was not used effectively enough, AI was dumb, too repetitive environments, no save game, respawning enemies and of course we now have multiplayer, which will be delivered in the box. This has all been fixed in

Better weapons. We have gone with the resource system for weapons simply because it gives a nice balance between tactical decisions and tension (As you really don't want to lose an expensive weapon). It works a bit different from other games though; it is not so much a focus on it, meaning you will get cash more easily. This was done so the balance between a team shouldn¿t be too much on the weapons, as you can quickly buy good weapons. To prevent spawn camping, where the other team camps inside another teams spawn area, we have two main features to fight this. We have AI controlled guns on the risky spawns, so if the other team goes into it, they will be shot. We have also multiple spawn areas, so the players can choose which one to spawn inside. Maps usually have two or three spawn areas for each team for each objective. We have also tried to make the maps very easy to understand, and we have really tried to force the players to use the map computer, as it gives players important info, like where the security cameras are located, where your teammates are, where the objectives are, what the current objective is etc., etc. Action Vault: When did you begin development of the game and what is the current status? When do you think it will be ready for release, and how confident are you about this date? Ole Marius Kohmann: We started working on IGI2 just after the release of Project IGI, which would be January, 2001. Currently we are working towards alpha. We are aiming for a release in Q2, 2002. It means a lot of work, but we are used to that, so I guess we are optimistic about the date. Action Vault: The tactical action category is pretty popular these days, with a number of games in development. What will make IGI 2: Covert Strike stand out from the crowd, and what kind of gamer will it appeal to most? Ole Marius Kohmann: IGI2 is first of all a story driven FPS located in a huge environment containing buildings, trees, bushes and rocks. We have good AI, huge scripted events, lots of guns and strong characters. We are focusing hard on encouraging the player to use stealth instead of Rambo tactics. However, if you really want to go for the shoot-first-ask-later you can, it will not be easy though :) The AI are badasses! Action Vault: Is there anything else you¿d like to tell our readers, or anything you¿d like to ask them? Ole Marius Kohmann: Buy IGI2! Based on the success of the original game, we suspect quite a few fans.
