Yep, the killer was already upon them…Think of “When a Stranger Calls” as a triptych: The first part is pure Hitchcockian suspense, the third part is like a John Carpenter battle royale showdown. And the second part, the middle part, that’s where things get tricky, and is the reason why many critics have slept on this singular movie. The middle part of “When a Stranger Calls” sees the killer (Tony Beckley) escape from prison after some years and him trying to act “normal” in Los Angeles, where he romantically pursues a woman at a bar played by Colleen Dewhurst. Suddenly it’s not a horror movie at all but something almost Bergmanesque, a relationship study of pathos and pity. It’s just about the most a horror movie, or any movie, has ever asked you to empathize with a child killer. And Beckley’s withered frame (the actor died of an unknown illness just six months after the film’s release, and appears so gaunt there’s some suspicion he may have been an undiagnosed early AIDS victim) is unforgettably chilling. For some, this middle section — moody in its inhabiting of a particularly industrial and offputting L.A. — may be where “When a Stranger Calls” falls apart. Lugosi is a mysterious psychiatrist who, with an innocent American couple serving as the audience surrogates in tow, arrives during a cold dark night at the remote Hungarian mansion of Karloff’s menacing architect to settle some unfinished business and uncover a satanic scheme. Thin at a little over an hour, “The Black Cat” nonetheless has a huge place in horror history as an early film to emphasize atmosphere and human cruelty over monsters to create terror. Argento's, but still ranks pretty close to the top of his filmography, all things considered. It's a movie that demonstrates he knew what he was doing right from the start... and also established his early liking of stories about finding a serial killer and then being targeted by the serial killer, because that's the plot here, in a nutshell. That being said, there's a little more going on than just a single person being the killer, given there's a shadowy pharmaceutical company that could be linked to a series of murders somehow. It keeps the intrigue high and the sense of lunacy/atmosphere even higher, ensuring The Cat o' Nine Tails is a fun watch overall. 6 'Phenomena' (1985) image via New Line Cinema IMDb Score: 6.7/10 Though there are plenty of crazy Dario Argento movies, Phenomena could well hold the distinction of being the craziest movie he ever directed. The main character here is a young girl (played by Jennifer Connelly in one of her earliest roles) who can communicate with insects. Don't worry, things get wilder! She's sent to a boarding school, and there becomes the one person who may be able to solve a series of murders. She also meets a professor played by Donald Pleasance (of Halloween fame) who has a pet chimp. Essentially, "Leonara 'Brandt' Johnson" (Barbara Shelley) has inherited an infliction from her uncle which causes her soul to transform into a leopard at night which kills those she doesn't like. She confides to her ex-boyfriend (who happens to be a psychiatrist) and he convinces her to be admitted into a sanitarium in London for treatment. But even though she has left her uncle's estate and traveled to London she cannot escape her curse. At any rate, while this is a rather short movie it manages to give a good account of itself in spite of the time constraints. As a side note, I enjoyed the performance of Barbara Shelley as she managed to keep things interesting with both her talent and her looks.
