Now that the syslog implementation for the upcoming LogMeister v5 release is functionally complete, I thought it would be a good time to take a look at how it all fits together.Note: this screenshot shows how the interface appears on Windows 10 TH2; different Windows operating systems will impart a different “look”.Above is the first and most important screen you’ll see when enabling syslog reception in LogMeister, as it defines which incoming channels will be active. As you can see, syslog messages can be received via UDP and/or TCP, and a further option of secure messaging using SSL/TLS is also available. Obviously the TLS option requires that the computer running LogMeister has a valid certificate, both to verify its identity to the client and to provide the tools for message encryption. Optionally LogMeister can also be set to require a certificate at the client end of the connection, for mutual identity verification.Once the appropriate doors have been opened for incoming syslog messages, the next step is to define where to put them. In keeping with LogMeister’s model, you do this by defining one or more “feeds”.The very first page of the syslog feed wizard lets you decide which channel, or combination of channels, can provide incoming messages. This opens up the possibility of segregating messages into different feeds by delivery protocol. As with existing LogMeister feeds from Windows event logs, text logs and so on, a later page in the wizard lets you build up sophisticated rules to further constrain which messages a feed will accept. For example, you could create a feed that deals only with messages from specific clients, be they servers, client PCs or hardware firewalls or similar devices. Alternatively you could just as easily create a feed that records and reacts to “Emergency” level messages only. 2025-03-30A recent support query on the various filtering options in LogMeister and EventMeister got me thinking it would be helpful to give an overview here. All filtering in LogMeister / EventMeister is accomplished by building simple logical rules. Once constructed, the rules can be used in several different places – with accordingly different effects:Directly on the feedFilter rules used here constrain which log entries are actually collected and stored for a particular feed. To put it another away, every single incoming log entry has to match those rules otherwise it will simply be ignored; it won’t go into the feed store, it won’t trigger any notifications, and it won’t appear in any reports.By default, every feed starts out unfiltered, so all available log entries are collected. However, if you want to create filter rule for the feed, open the Feed Properties sheet and switch to the Filter tab. If you need help with actual rule construction, press the F1 key to bring up the Help file. Finally, don’t forget that if you want to use the same filter on a number of feeds, you can use “Copy Properties To…” to apply the current filter to any number of destination feeds. In a NotificationRules entered here determine what incoming log entries will cause the notification to fire. If no rules are present, every incoming log entry is able to trigger the notification; where rules are present, the new log entry has to match those rules before the notification can fire.To define or edit notification
2025-03-31New versions of LogMeister and EventMeister have just been released which bring very useful improvements for those collecting and filtering events from the various Windows event logs. Perhaps the single most important change is that if you’re using real-time monitoring with Windows Event Collection (WEC), you will no longer miss out on events if there’s an extended period of monitoring downtime due to maintenance of the remote server or network failure for example. Previously, there was a short grace period where event collection would play catch-up, but now that grace period can stretch over hours and days if needed. Our expectation is that most clients will want this new functionality, so it defaults to “on” even with existing feeds, but it can be disabled by turning off the “Use bookmarks” option on the Eventlog property page for event log feeds:Another improvement in the new release – also affecting realtime collection using WEC – is the ability to populate the feed store with pre-existing events. Previously the only way to get these old events into a newly-created feed store was to do a single round of “polling” collection, then switch to real-time collection. Now however you’ll be given the option to collect old data automatically on creation of a real-time feed, and if you miss that option you can always just “reset” the feed to receive another opportunity:One final benefit of the new release – for those creating fresh event log feeds – is an improved search mechanism that finds networked computers more quickly and more fully, especially if you’re using active directory. You can get the latest versions of both apps from our download page here: update, please just grab the latest appropriate package and do an “over-the-top” install (note to avoid a restart, it’s best to quit LogMeister/EventMeister and stop the associated service first).
