It is NOT possible to swap the editions directly on the programmer. This would not make any sense – the faceplate would not match anymore. The Value knob (which wasn't present on the D50), but not the numeric keypad, which is a great shame. But there's another unexpected bonus with every VC1...I was contemplating Roland's claims that the VC1 and D50 are identical when a thought occurred to me. I went and unwrapped my rarely used PG1000 hardware D50 programmer, connected its MIDI output and input to the sockets on the back of the XT and... Blimey! It worked. As far as I could tell, the VC1 responds to the D50's dedicated programmer as the D50 itself does, partial by partial, tone by tone, and patch by patch. You don't even have to be viewing the appropriate page for the PG1000 to be able to do its stuff; just move a slider, and listen to the sound change. Inevitably, there are a couple of inconsistencies; for example, the PCM select slider on the PG1000 travels from 01 to 100, so the new samples in locations 101 to 128 are unobtainable, but I'm nonetheless amazed by this degree of compatibility.Despite all the good stuff, I did uncover a few problems during my time with the VC1. Firstly, don't follow the instructions in the manual regarding Bulk Dumping from the VC1 to a D50: they don't work. Instead, select a patch in the VC1 block you wish to dump, and then request the dump from the D50. Once it's complete, the D50 will appear to lock up, so press Exit. The screen will say 'Cancelled' but you'll find that all 64 patches have arrived at their destinations nevertheless. Secondly, dumping patches from the D50 to the VC1 (ie. in the other direction) also fails when you follow the instructions in the manual. I found that you have to add a second MIDI cable so that the two OSC Playback, MIDI, and all timecode protocols are unrestricted. Onyx Elite With a Key attached, the software runs in LIVE 128 mode. October 20th, 2022It is with great sadness that we share with you the passing of one of our company’s co-founders, Nebojsa Djogo, at the age of 52.Originally from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Nebojsa relocated to Ottawa, Ontario, to pursue a successful career in computer programming. It was there in 1999 that Nebojsa first met Deskew co-founder Dr. David Jameson, who came from IBM Research, having held a series of senior positions. Nebojsa was subsequently hired for some contract work at David’s first startup, DigiPortal Software. Recognizing that their approach to programming was strikingly similar, David and Nebojsa created Deskew Technologies a couple of years later to explore opportunities in which they could collaborate closely.David, who considered Nebojsa one of his closest friends, remembers him as a gifted programmer who was meticulous when it came to usability and a program’s front-end look and feel.But it was David’s and Nebojsa’s shared love for music and live performance that galvanized their 20-year working relationship. Each of them made live performances an active part of their lives, Nebojsa playing guitar and David playing keyboards in different bands. And while Nebojsa’s initial interest was in world music, he later embraced electronic music and MIDI-based programming.As talented performers, David and Nebojsa recognized early on that the software available to live musicians simply wasn’t good enough. They saw an opportunity to change the live performance world by building something better based on their own experience on stage. The result was Gig Performer.Nebojsa worked passionately on Gig Performer and was relentlessly dedicated to serving musicians using the software, until his illness took its toll.
