What is the monster walk?If the name “monster walk” leaves you scratching your head—or a little unnerved—don’t feel bad. There’s no obvious reason this exercise got slapped with the moniker. Unless maybe you think about how you might “act like a monster,” playfully creeping up on your niece or nephew—slightly crouched and low, hands out front, taking wide, staggering steps toward your “prey.”(Here’s what you need to know about the crab walk exercise.)And even though “monster walks” sound odd, they’re a surprisingly accessible exercise for almost everyone, offering an easy, home-based option for targeting the hip abductors. Your best option is the type of small, looped band that’s designed for this type of leg exercise. However, if you don’t have access to a small, looped band, try tying a longer band or tubing so that when you wrap the band around your thighs just above your knees, it’s taut (but not overly tight) when your feet are hip-distance apart.While pretty much any type of resistance band can work—and you can pick up a set of varied-resistance loops, like LetsFit resistance loop exercise bands ($5)—it’s important to realize that they’re not always super comfortable. If you’re wearing shorts, you may find that the tubing pulls on your leg hairs or irritates your skin. McFarland points out that the Mark Bells Hip Circle ($20) is the most comfortable band he’s personally used because it doesn’t pull on the skin or hair.(This is the best exercise equipment for at-home workouts.)Monster walk resistance band placementThe main difference between variations on the monster walk is where you place the resistance band. Common placements are right above the knees at the lower part of the thighs, around the legs just above the ankles, or a combination of the two. Really, which placement you use should be based on your own strength and familiarity with the exercise.“The further the resistance band from the lever, the more difficult the movement will be,” explains McFarland. When you increase the resistance of your monster walks, you help grow and strengthen the hip flexor and abductor muscles. Specifically, McFarland says that monster walks target the tensor fascia latae (TFL) (a muscle that helps stabilize the hip and knee), gluteus medius, and gluteus minimus (the two smaller muscles of the glutes that assist with abduction).How to use monster walks as a primerWhen doing a lower body workout, first spend about five to 10 minutes getting warm. You can do this by walking or jogging as a warm-up, or by performing an active warm-up routine. Then, before you dive into the bulk of your lower body strength training, perform two to three sets of low-resistance monster walks with the band placed above your knee for 15 to 20-yards per set.How to use monster walks to build muscleTo use monster walks for muscle growth, you want to add the exercise toward the end of your lower body strength training routine. For example, you would do this after having performed your compound exercises, such as squats, lunges, or deadlifts. Choose a higher-level resistance band or a more challenging band placement (for instance, above your ankles, or a combination of above your ankles and above your knees), then perform three to five sets of monster walks for five to 10-yards per set. Once you get deeper into the album all of this becomes tedious and you’ll begin wondering why Stipe wouldn’t just turn down the distortion just at little bit. The boisterous riffs of Circus Eny and I Took You In sound like re-hashed b-sides as the band begins to retreat to the same old riffs that started off the album. Another minor downside is the lack of the strong song-writing. This is why many people dislike the album and although I personally think that Monster would have been a more complete album if there were more songs focusing on the lyrics rather than distortion it doesn’t really bother me since Monster is so fun to rock out to. While Monster may not contain the strong songwriting of Automatic For the People or the upbeat pop tunes featured on Green it’s still a great listen. Monster is often regarded as the bands low point but I strongly disagree. I think that people take the album a bit too seriously, Peter Bucks guitar work may not be revolutionary but it’s fun to listen to a fairly conservative band rock out. If one thing hasn’t changed it’s Michael Stipes voice, you still can’t tell what the hell the guy is shouting in his shrill, lazy, and dreamy voice. When Monster hit the stores is 1994 everybody was shocked. Following the slow, dreary Automatic for the People Monster showcased a completely different side of R.E.M.. The album is probably the bands most controversial release as some die hard fans can’t stand it and others regard it as their favorite R.E.M. album. I’m one of those people that really enjoy Monster,it’s not one of the bands stronger 90's efforts but it sure is one hell of a rock album.After the first listen Monster is without a doubt the hardest rocking R.E.M. album to date. Instead of playing downbeat folk tunes (Everybody Hurts) or whimsical pop songs (Shiny Happy People) the band decided to take a more hard-rocking and grunge influenced route. At first the loud guitar distortion is difficult to adjust to but after a while you’ll be singing a long with Michael Stipes muffled and uncontrolled voice. Songs such as What’s the Frequency Kenneth? and Star 69 feature the band at its finest as they crank up the distortion and bust out three-chord riffs. A good portion of these tracks are played at a fairly slow tempo, the overall sound is extremely sludgy and sloppy. However Monster isn’t a complete sludgefest as Stipe manages to fit in a couple of subdued and downbeat tracks. Tongue is a very relaxing tune as it features a soft, soothing piano part without any guitar or bass. The strange electronic glitches in I Don’t Sleep, I Dream give the album a bit of variety as the song is a mix of subtle piano chords and western guitar riffs. These two tracks provide the listener with a casual break from the noise and they are also some of the strongest tracks featured on the album. However Monster isn’t a complete sludgefest as Stipe manages to fit in a couple of subdued and downbeat tracks. Tongue is a very relaxing tune as it features a soft, soothing piano part without any guitar or bass. The strange electronic glitches in I Don’t Sleep, I Dream give the album a bit of variety as the song is a mix of subtle piano chords and western guitar riffs.
