Cockatrice - MTG (Magic: the Gathering)

Magic (and Sally) ecosystem. If Sally suppresses anything that smells like something WotC would disapprove of it's only going to drive people elsewhere. This is not to say Sally should allow discussion of some activities that are certainly across a line (i.e. proxies). #26 Mar 22, 2013 VegaTDM View User Profile View Posts Send Message Archmage Overlord Location: NC Join Date: 12/14/2012 Posts: 1,110 Member Details The catch is, every time you run Cockatrice it makes temporary digital copies of copyrighted content that *is* owned by Hasbro, and that the Cockatrice creators do not have the rights to distribute, freely or otherwise. If you think that doesn't count as "copying" for copyright then you are sorely mistaken, indeed courts have previously held that reproducing something in your RAM buffer can constitute a violation of copyright.Do I agree that this is the way the law *should* be? No. But, how the law *should* be is largely irrelevant to the present issue. What is at issue is how the law *is*.(edit: unless, of course, I'm misinformed about how Cockatrice operates which is a possibility)Pretty sure fair use laws covers that. Every time someone looked at any type of art their computer caches a thumbnail, or at least temp stores the data in RAM.Also did they accept "donations"? If they did they might be in some hot water. Irrelevant. ROMs of games nintendo made for the NES also fall in the same, but links to ROMS aren't allowed either. If that is illegal, then Cockatrice is also illegal as that is a direct competitor of MTGO and Hasbro is actively trying to get it offline. There are some double standards here on this forum. No, because the creators of cockatrice gave consent for the program to be distributed. Cockatrice IS NOT OWNED by Hasbro. I dont think there will be any backlash from discussing alternate servers for cockatrice as long as no money changes hands. Its like when activision went after WoW private servers, the ones they targeted were the ones making boatloads of cash in "donations".Carry on Sally, carry on. #15 Mar 21, 2013 UsaSatsui View User Profile View Posts Send Message Archmage Overlord Location: Massachusetts Join Date: 5/23/2010 Posts: 1,491 Member Details I posted a link to a program from 1997 with outdated rules, not functioning under a current os, is not sold anymore, will never be sold anymore and is only kept alive by enthusiasts. I am not aware of any actions of WotC to get the program offline. Still I was suspended for a week. (I appealed for that and never received an answer.)If that is illegal, then Cockatrice is also illegal as that is a direct competitor of MTGO and Hasbro is actively trying to get it offline. There are some double standards here on this forum. If you're talking about the Microprose version of the game, then yes, that was illegal. It was a copyrighted program that you didn't have the rights to distribute. That breaks the law, even if the program is old and not on sale anymore. The issue with Cockatrice is actually an entirely different thing. From what I understand, the creators allow the program to be distributed freely. What's going on is Wizards is claiming the program violates their copyrights. It's an entirely different situation. More than 500 different foils, Japanese alternate arts, special editions, etc. But it’s more interesting, I think, to get a snapshot of the base sets, so that we’re comparing apples to apples with the original sets from the 90s.Of course, we knew what would be at the top, but I’ll bet you didn’t have Tenth Edition on your bingo card!Collectibles are incredibly volatile spaces to invest in, as anyone who was collecting comics in the 90s can tell you. So don’t take any of this as investment advice, please. I myself do not do Magic finance stuff. It feels super risky. It looks great now with everything having gone up so steeply since 2019, but you know what they say about what goes up. It seems like someone bought a Beta Lotus in 2022 for around $80k, and I imagine there’s a lot of regret there! This is a fascinating snapshot into the collector’s markets and the price we put on nostalgia. There were a few surprises for me, but how about you? Any surprises?
