PHD2 is open source telescope guiding software that simplifies the process of tracking a guide star, letting you concentrate on other aspects of deep-sky imaging or spectroscopy. The latest v2.6.8 release offers new functionality for Altair and QHY cameras, better tolerance of INDI/ASCOM mount drivers that incorrectly report guide speed and an updated Traditional Chinese translation. The software includes an easy-to-use, “push here dummy” guiding for beginners, sophisticated guiding and analysis tools for experienced users and extensive support for commonly-used equipment. It is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux and there is an extensive online help and responsive technical support. The Open PHD Guiding project began in 2009 when Craig Stark of Stark Labs, the author of PHD Guiding and Nebulosity, released the source code of his popular PHD Guiding application. In 2012 the project was picked up by Bret McKee who did a major refactoring of the code, reworking much of the internal infrastructure and introducing the multi-threaded architecture in use by the application today. In 2013 the project maintenance role transitioned to the current maintainers, Andy Galasso and Bruce Waddington, who have overseen the development of the application since then. The application today is the result of contributions from more than 40 developers and translators.Developers interested in working on the project are encouraged to send pull requests via the PHD2 project page on GitHub and to participate in the PHD2 Forum. Best tool for long focal length solar system imaging, it will deliver very good results for video astronomy (or EAA) using the Live Stacking features in the free AltairCapture software or SharpCap. Speed and reliability in one camera: USB3.0 and on-board memory buffering give much faster transfer speeds than the GPCAM USB2.0 series, pushing the USB3.0 format to the limit, yet within a stable envelope.QUALITY software and drivers included: Unlike cheaper cameras, Altair Astro has spent considerable time developing the extensively featured and intuitive AltairCapture software, which can be downloaded from www.altairastro.help. AltairCapture is a fast, stable 64 bit Windows application, which allows full control of the camera in high speed video or still mode supporting all the major file formats useful for astro imaging. Furthermore, the popular PHD Guiding, SharpCap, APT and NINA astro software are directly supported. ASCOM drivers are also available for download at www.altairastro.help where you can also get regular driver and software updates. The installation process is simple, and unlike with cheaper cameras, there is no need to waste time tweaking .DLL files or firmware to make your camera perform as expected.Wide compatibility: Although the Hypercam is a USB3.0 camera, it is also fully compatible with USB2.0 ports when a longer cable and less speed are required, for example in deepsky or video astronomy using the live stacking features in AltairCapture or Sharpcap. Autoguiding: The camera has an ST4 auto-guiding port, and can be used to auto-guide with mounts from all the major manufacturers supporting ST4 format, including iOptron, Celestron and Skywatcher. Fan cooling: The Hypercam is cooled with an internal low vibration fan, powered though the USB port. The fan can be switched on or off and the speed controlled in AltairCapture and SharpCap. Cool air is drawn in through the vents at the side of the casing, over a large internal heat-sink. The heat-sink is connected directly with the sensor board just like a computer CPU. The free flow of air through the casing cools not only the sensor, but all the internal electronics boards. Cooling is desirable for long exposure imaging to reduce thermal noise. Some camera casings get uncomfortably hot during a solar imaging session. The Hypercam is designed for consistent, reliable solar imaging with a solar filter and diagonal or Hershel Wedge. With the fan running, the Hypercam electronics and sensor will remain cooler than other cameras.Supported File formats: TheDocumentation - PHD2 Guiding - Open PHD Guiding
Navigating the labyrinthine journey of a PhD program is no small feat. From the day you step into your graduate program as a bright-eyed doctoral student, you’re immediately thrust into a complex weave of coursework, research, and milestones.By the second year, you’ve transitioned from coursework to research, laying the groundwork for your dissertation—a pivotal component in your scholarly endeavour. Come the third year, you face the critical oral examination, a hurdle that could make or break years of hard work. But how does one streamline this multifaceted journey? The answer lies in a well-planned PhD timeline. This blog serves as an invaluable guide for any PhD student looking to complete their doctoral studies efficiently, walking you through each milestone from coursework to graduation. How to Begin with the PhD Timeline Planning?Planning your PhD timeline is an essential first step in your PhD program.Success in any PhD program depends, to a large extent, on effective time management and keeping track of progress through a thoughtfully crafted PhD timeline. Start with outlining all your major requirements:coursework, research, dissertation, and the expected time needed for each task.I also highly recommend factoring in failure time – give yourself a little bit of wiggle room for when things, invariably – go wrong. It’s crucial to remain realistic about the time you can commit daily or weekly while keeping long-term goals in mind.Regular check-ins on your PhD timeline and supervisor will help you stay on track and allow you to adapt if necessary.Adjustments may be needed as you progress through your PhD program, but having a timeline as a guide can make the journey less daunting and more achievable. Elements to include in a 3-year PhD timelineThe initial stage in this timeline typically involves coursework, often lasting one year, where the student engrosses themselves in advanced study in their chosen field.Once the coursework is done (USA PhDs), they focus on proposing, conducting, and presenting their initial research.By the end of the second year, most students should have a clear direction for their dissertation, a core component of the PhD process. In this third and final year of the PhD timeline, the student focuses primarily on completing their dissertation, which involves collecting data, analyzing results, and organizing their research into a substantial, original, and cohesive document that contributes to contemporary knowledge in their field.Regular reviews and modifications of the PhD timeline may also be necessary to accommodate various unpredictable circumstances, thus making this timeline both a guide and a flexible workplan. It is a significant tool in successfully navigating the maze of becoming a PhD holder. Create Your PhD Timeline for a 3 year completionCreating a timeline for a 3-year PhD program requires careful planning, as you’ll have multiple milestones and tasks to complete. This timeline may vary depending on your specific field, institution, or country, but here is a general outline you can use as a starting point:Year & QuarterActivity/MilestoneDescriptionOutcome/OutputYear 1, Q1Admission & OnboardingFormalities for joining the program, including orientation.Official start of the program.Initial Literature ReviewFamiliarize yourself with the existing research in your field.Foundation forChangelog - PHD2 Guiding - Open PHD Guiding
