The Chinese keyboard layout, which allows for the efficient input of Chinese characters on modern computers, is a product of several innovations and contributions from multiple inventors and engineers over the years. One key figure in this development is Zhou Youguang, often hailed as the "father of Pinyin."Zhou Youguang, born in 1906 in Changzhou, China, was initially trained as a banker and economist, but his legacy is most notably tied to linguistics. In the 1950s, Zhou played a central role in the creation of the Pinyin system, which is a Romanization of Chinese characters into the Latin alphabet. The introduction of Pinyin revolutionized the way Chinese was taught and made it easier for people to learn Mandarin pronunciation. This system also became a cornerstone in the development of Chinese input methods for computers. The early methods of typing Chinese were cumbersome and relied heavily on memorization of codes or shapes. However, with the advent of Pinyin, Zhou's work facilitated the creation of Pinyin-based input methods, where users type the phonetic spelling of a character, and the software suggests the corresponding Chinese characters. While Zhou Youguang did not directly create a Chinese keyboard layout, his invention of Pinyin was instrumental in the development of modern Chinese input systems, which use various keyboard layouts tailored for the language. His contributions laid the groundwork for more intuitive and efficient ways to input Chinese characters, which are now standard in both China and around the world.Zhou's influence extends beyond just the technical aspects; he also played a significant role in language reform and education in China. His work made Chinese more accessible globally and contributed significantly to the digitization of the language. Zhou lived to be 111 years old, witnessing the vast impact of his work on Chinese communication and technology.#chinese #keyboard #layout #technology #computer. The rest of the input sequence, and found match for it! Just type spacebar then we're done! One More example. Type in "jiaoshoulou"(教授楼):HanWJ didn't find the whole word, but found "教授". Enter it using Space bar:Again, after you input, HanWJ takes the rest of the pinyin sequence, and lists character choices for it! Using number key, enter "楼", then we're done! All words constructed and entered will be put into WordBase automatically.★HanWJ Chinese Input allows you to simplify pinyin input in a few important ways (HanWJ Pinyin Simplifications). For example, instead of typing "liang", you can use "liag"; instead of "hang" you can enter hag. Basically you substitute "ng" with "g".e.g.,“中国” input as "zhogguo" “红楼梦” input as "hogloumeg" “富丽堂皇” input as "fulitaghuag"Other simplification rules are: "iao" can be input as "io"; "uang" be input as "ug". For example, you can input "tiao" as "tio" and "zhuang" as "zhug".You can also input a word using each character's first pinyin letter. For example, “中国” input as "zg" (zhongguo-->zg:first letter of each character's pinyin) or "zguo"(still 1st letter of pinyin, but the last character's pinyin is spelled fully. This is useful when choices are too many)“红楼梦” input as "hlm"(hongloumeng-->hlm)or "hlmeg"(last character spelled fully)“富丽堂皇” as "flth"★With pinyin input, you can use RETURN key to input all English letters (and already selected sub-words) directly.★Advanced methods. When inputing character, we often get too many choices. One way to eliminate those extras is to use Tone.Chinese character has five possible tones (Please skip this part if you can not differentiate them. This is not absolutelynecessary when inputing Chinese). HanWJ uses the leftmost column of keys(four keys) and the right-shift key to denote them. i.e., tone 1-5 are represented by " ` " key,Tab key,CapsLock key,Left-Shift key, Right-Shift key, respectively. You can find out these key-tone assignments using Alt+K.Now let's try examples.“诗”inputs as "shi".Google Pinyin Input - APKPure.com
There are well over a decade's worth of mutually incompatible instructions for setting up basic pinyin input on previous versions of Ubuntu. People make lots of claims about needing to do now obsolete rubbish, which means that many people (including me) end up spending many hours only to end up with a broken install. Is there a simple procedure to set up Chinese pinyin input for simplified characters that doesn't require many hours of trial and error and leave the system half broken? asked May 16, 2022 at 14:53 AntonOfTheWoodsAntonOfTheWoods7552 gold badges6 silver badges14 bronze badges Note: These instructions are ONLY meant for vanilla Ubuntu and ONLY for 22.04 for basic pinyin input for simplified characters.Ubuntu has never provided an easy, well-documented option for adding pinyin input support. However, to get basic pinyin support in 22.04 you can simply:Open Settings, go to Region & Language -> Manage Installed Languages -> Install / Remove languages.Select Chinese (Simplified). Make sure Keyboard Input method system has Ibus selected. Apply.Reboot (please don't think "this isn't necessary", just do it or you will waste more precious time!)Log back in, reopen Settings, go to Keyboard.Click on the "+" sign under Input sources.Select Chinese (China) and then Chinese (Intelligent Pinyin). You should now have a little "en" (or whatever the language code of your Ubuntu install is) at the top right of your main screen which you can click on and get a list of available input methods, including Chinese (Intelligent pinyin). Open anything that can receive text (like gedit, openoffice, vim, FF,...) and try it out. You can also change between them with Super/Win + space.Reboot to make sure it is still there after a reboot.Be happy that you didn't lose any more time on this ridiculously trivial issue that is still a massive pain in 2022!If you don't need extra bells and whistles then do NOT bother with fcitx (and the supposedly excellent "google pinyin"), uim or any other exotic option! They are extremely hit-and-miss trying to install, and finding a guide that is relevant to 22.04 is almost impossible. Some claim to have "tested with 22.04" but they have done upgrades of previous versions that they had working, not fresh installs. answered May 16, 2022 at 14:53 AntonOfTheWoodsAntonOfTheWoods7552 gold badges6 silver badges14 bronze badges 13 The default Chinese Pinyin IME installed in Ubuntu desktop settings -> keyboard -> input source is Intelligent Pinyin for IBus (ibus-libpinyin). It works, but not very well, especially when mixing Chinese and English input. After suffering with it for several months, I switched to Fcitx5 and feel much better.Below is my steps. I already have IBus Pinyin IME working, you may need extra steps from Ubuntu new installation.Install fctix5Run sudo aptGoogle Pinyin for Chinese Input
“PinyinTones”: Typing Pinyin with Tone Marks on Windows Now that you've got the PinyinTones keyboard selected, you can then type the letters of the pinyin, followed by the number for the tone. For example, to type the pinyin for 好, you simply type the pinyin ‘hao’, then the number “3” (for the tone), and then click “space”: hǎo It's great practice, because you have to remember the correct tone, but it's a lot easier than having to also remember where the tone mark goes. The PinyinTones keyboard takes care of it for you! Mac OS (Apple computers and laptops) We're going to be the first to admit it, typing pinyin with tone marks on Mac OS is a little trickier than on Windows. Probably the biggest difference is that you need to remember which vowel has the tone mark. While that might seem like a big drawback at first, if you are typing pinyin to help you memorize tones, it is MUCH more effective practice if you are forced to remember where the tone mark actually goes! To type pinyin with tone marks on your Mac device, you'll need to do three things: • Add the "ABC - Extended" keyboard to your input methods • Switch your input method to this keyboard • Type the vowels with the correct tone marksAdding the "ABC - Extended" keyboard on Mac OS The "ABC - Extended" keyboard is the input method you'll need to select when you want to type pinyin with tone.
