Need to open the same page in more than one tab? Today we’ll show you how to duplicate a tab the easy way in Chrome or Firefox. Today’s tip is brought to us thanks to How-To Geek reader Konc . First, use the Alt+D shortcut key sequence to move the focus to the location bar… and keep the Alt key held down. Now simply hit the Enter key (since you’ve got the Alt key held down). This will open up the current URL into a new tab, basically duplicating the tab. Once you’ve done it once or twice, you’ll realize that it’s extremely easy to use—just use Alt, D, Enter, and the tab is duplicated. The same thing works in Chrome as well, and is the only way that we know of to duplicate a tab from the keyboard. Note that you can duplicate a tab with the mouse in Chrome by simply right-clicking the tab. Duplicate with Tab Mix Plus (Firefox) If you are one of the many Tab Mix Plus users , you can always duplicate a tab with the context menu, or with the Ctrl+Alt+T shortcut key. The nice thing about the Tab Mix Plus variety is that it’ll keep all of the history in the duplicated tab. Then again, that’s a lot of extra memory that Firefox doesn’t necessarily need to use, so you might prefer to stick with the first shortcut key if you don’t need the history. "down side" to leaving applications open, is that they fill up the Dock and Application Switcher, which might bother some users. Since you mention the Switcher, I should mention a fun shortcut. Press command-tab to activate the Switcher. While holding the command key, use tab/shift-tab to select an application. You can release the command key to activate that application, or press Q to quit it right from the Switcher. Since the Switcher stays open, you can quit a lot of applications at once in the process. It wouldn't affect most people, but it bears mentioning that in all versions of Mac OS X prior to Leopard, the shortcut uses the Q key even for people using non-QWERTY layouts. For me on Dvorak, that's the apostrophe key instead. They finally fixed that bug, happily. #17 Anyway, looks like I'm alone on this one so I'll just have to get used to it You're not alone. I was a Windows user until 2003 when I switched to OS X (Jaguar!) and this is one of the things that still annoys me a bit to this day. I've gotten used to either cleaning up after the icons, or ignoring the ones that I know aren't taking up too many resources (like Xee, my favourite picture viewer). One habit that changed when I switched to my Mac laptop is that I never power down anymore. I just close the lid and let it sleep, and it resumes where I left off. I rarely even reboot anymore. This at least lends some continuity to what's running on my dock, as the apps stay there for days or weeks at a time. #18 If the application has only one window (ala iPhoto or System Preferences) it will quit when that window is closed, because the app can no longer function without that window open. The application can function perfectly happily with no windows open, in fact leaving the application running makes it easier to create a new blank document as well as quicker when opening another document in the same application (some complex applications can be annoyingly slow to open). #19 The application can function perfectly happily with no windows open, in fact leaving the application running makes it easier to create a new blank document as well as quicker when opening another document in the same application (some complex applications can be annoyingly slow to open). I think you misunderstood me. I agree with you, but was trying to clarify someone else's point. #20 The application can function perfectly happily with no windows open, in fact leaving the application running makes it easier to create a new blank document as well as quicker when opening another document

For everything else, you can use the custom shortcuts available in the Keyboard pane of system preferences to define a custom shortcut for any menubar action, including the one typically under the Window menu used to recall the primary window (it's name varies with every application). I do this myself for every app that doesn't have a shortcut key preset. answered Jul 8, 2012 at 2:56 peelmanpeelman4,89123 silver badges24 bronze badges You must log in to answer this question. Sublime Text Shortcut for Opening the Last Closed Tab

This simple thing never clicked for me before I saw it on Reddit: In many keyboard shortcuts on Windows and MacOS, adding the shift key makes the shortcut do the opposite of what it normally does.A few examples (On a Mac, replace ctrl or alt with cmd):ctrl-z = undo; shift-ctrl-z = redospace = page down; shift-space = page upctrl-tab (same on Mac) = next tab; shift-ctrl-tab = last tabalt-tab = next app; shift-alt-tab = last appctrl-t = open new tab; shift-ctrl-t = re-open last closed tabYou’ll notice that on almost any shortcut for moving around, you can add shift to move in the opposite direction.Sometimes shift puts a different twist on the action:ctrl-n = new file/document/item; shift-ctrl-n = new folder/smart itemctrl-v = paste; shift-ctrl-v = strip formatting and paste (great for moving text between documents and emails)ctrl-r = refresh; shift-ctrl-r = refresh really hardSo add shift to your favorite keyboard shortcuts, and do everything backward in heels..
