SMEs want rid of what’s left of their servers, and oftentimes the remaining machine in the SME space is a file server.Options for Replacing a File Server with a Cloud SolutionCan you replace a file server with a cloud option? Yes, you absolutely can, but it’s a matter of asking yourself a couple of questions:Is the cloud the best route for you?What’s the best option for a cloud solution?The first question is dictated by content in the file server. Several times, I’ve dealt with queries about engineers that use AutoCAD, which relies on huge files. Because of this, this scenario isn’t a great option because storing these files in the cloud often requires expensive appliance solutions. They'll have lots of opportunity to catch any errors. If the SME wants to send you content because that's how it's always been done, remind them that this project is different. If you haven't already, show them some activities like the ones you plan to prototype. Point out that to create that type of activity, you need to use a different process and collect different information than usual. This is one reason why I strongly recommend you include the SME from the beginning, starting with the business goal. The SME is happy to talk but doesn't say anything specific. If you're using the story-based approach, don't stop at "Tell me about a time..." Also ask very specific questions like, "What were you thinking at this point? Why?" and "What would a novice say instead of what you said?" If you're watching them perform the task or reviewing a video, stop the action as necessary to ask questions like, "Why did you do that?" and "How did you know that. Instead, ask them to tell you a story or complete the task while thinking out loud, and only then ask about the necessary knowledge. This will help remind the SME that your goal is to help people to make good decisions, not just to get information into their heads. Remind the SME that this activity will be one of a series The SME might be concerned about the many basic concepts and other prerequisite knowledge that people should have before they can make the decision in your activity. Reassure the SME that this won’t be the only activity and that people will have plenty of opportunity to learn the basics through other activities. However, if you’re planning to make your prototype the first activity and the SME has a long list of what people legitimately need to know before they can make the decision, you might want to rethink your prototype. You’ll want to organize your activities so the earlier ones help people learn (or confirm their pre-existing knowledge of) basic concepts, one at a time, before you put them in situations that require them to apply
