GIMP Version: 2.8.10Operating System: LinuxGIMP Experience: Intermediate LevelHello,I'm interested what people know about the new features in the upcoming 2.10 version of Gimp.* 16 / 32 bit depth: As a digital painter, I know that 16-bit depth creates more painterly colour blending. But it seemed that when I used this mode under Krita, it had a huge impact on performance. Would this be the same scenario with Gimp?* OpenGL acceleration. This one interests me, because seemingly Gimp has trouble handling very large files. What aspect of OpenGL would improve Gimp. I'm assuming it relates to the performance of canvas rendering.* Natural media brushes: This one isn't confirmed for 2.10, but appeared on the roadmap as a low priority. Anyone know any more about them?I've tried the 2.9 beta on Windows, but the performance of the brush was too laggy to be usable. Though I like the new dark default theme. To reproduce the crash, please create a file in Gimp with the settings, Image --> Mode -> Greyscale, and Image --> Precision -> 32 bit integer or 32 bit floating point. Save the file in a directory, and try to open the directory in XnView. XnView will crash. Tested in XnView 0.9.6 and 0.9.4. Linux. In Gimp, when the XCF file is changed to Greyscale 16 bit, and saved, XnView will open the folder and show a preview of the file.(It is probably better to save greyscale images as 16 bit, but it needs to be pointed out that XnView will crash whenever a greyscale 32 bit file is present.) blewbubbles Posts: 4 Joined: Thu Aug 13, 2020 11:42 am Re: XnView crashes with greyscale 32 bit XCF Post by blewbubbles » Fri Aug 14, 2020 5:30 pm Pardon me,I've done a few more tests and found that the crash is not necessarily caused by the 32 bit greyscale combination as such. I found another image on my desktop that is saved like that, without making Xnview crash, however, it doesn't show a preview, like other multi-layered XCF's. So, when I change this image from greyscale 32 bit, to greyscale 16 bit and save it, this image then makes Xnview crash. Running Xnview from the terminal, it gives the following output from the moment the file, named orion.xcf, is saved with new settings:Code: Select all############################################ onTimerDirectoryChanged 1######## checkChildren ############################################ onTimerDirectoryChanged okCheckContent...ThumbLoaderThread :: stop()### ThumbLoaderThread :: stop() okThumbLoaderThread :: stop()### ThumbLoaderThread :: stop() ok### ThumbLoaderThread :: setFileList(3)ThumbLoaderThread :: stop()### ThumbLoaderThread :: stop() ok ** start condition wake one 2### ThumbLoaderThread :: setFileList ok######ThumbLoaderThread :: forever 2 : 2ac0910 CHECK ######ThumbLoaderThread :: forever : 2ac0910 ** start condition wait############################################ onTimerDirectoryChanged 1######## checkChildren ############################################ onTimerDirectoryChanged okCheckContent...ThumbLoaderThread :: stop()### ThumbLoaderThread :: stop() okThumbLoaderThread :: stop()### ThumbLoaderThread :: stop() ok### ThumbLoaderThread :: setFileList(3)ThumbLoaderThread ::Comments

2025-04-14GNU Image Manipulation Program is one of the best open source projects out there as an alternative for PhotoShop. This post discusses how we can build and install GIMP from source code. I did it because I wanted to contribute to the project. August 29, 2014 - 3 minute read - GNU Image Manipulation Program is one of the best open source projects out there as an alternative for PhotoShop. I used it extensively for every graphic design purpose. It is natural that once you know the product very well, one starts finding possible improvements in the product. I had a few in my list and as a developer I thought why not build them myself. Hence the idea of building GIMP from source code, so that I can make changes to source and start developing. What follows is a step-by-step guide to build GIMP from source. This guide is tested on Ubuntu 14.04 32 bit. It is suggested to use the most recent version of your distro.Step 1:Let’s create a directory where we will store all the clones or tar balls. Fire up the terminal and run the following commands. (I’d recommend not to close the terminal session until the installation is done)mkdir -p ~/sourcefilescd ~/sourcefilesStep 2:Get the latest source code of GIMP from using one of the following commands.git clone git://git.gnome.org/gimpThis might take few minutes depending on connection speed. Feed your pet by the time its cloned.Step 3:Now, you wouldn’t want GIMP you already have in your machine to interfere with the GIMP you’re going to install. So let’s set the path for the new GIMP.prefix=/opt/gimpexport PATH=$prefix/bin:$PATHexport PKG_CONFIG_PATH=$prefix/lib/pkgconfigexport LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$prefix/libStep 4:While compiling GIMP source code, you’ll need lot of GIMP development dependencies. So let’s install them first.sudo apt-get build-dep gimpThis might take quite a while depending on connection speed. Go walk your pet in the meanwhile.Step 5:We also need babl and gegl packages before we start compiling GIMP source. For babl:cd ~/tmpgit clone git://git.gnome.org/bablcd babl./autogen.sh --prefix=$prefixmakesudo make installFor gegl:cd ~/tmpgit clone git://git.gnome.org/geglcd gegl./configure --prefix=$prefixmakesudo make installStep 6:Now we are ready to build GIMP from source.cd ~/tmp/gimp./configure --prefix=$prefixLook out for any errors. You might be missing any dependencies or packages. Feel free to comment below if you face any difficulties and share how you solved it. I’ll append your comment in the Issues and Resolves section below. If you can’t figure out the resolve for your problem the GIMP community is always
