And so they turned their attention to re-inventing the zoo they had, without public financial support. That is not easy in today's climate.I think that what is unique about the lion exhibit is not its acreage, but rather how cheap it was to build. Today, a zoo wanting to build a new exhibit will be thinking US$15million and above perhaps to US$30million. Gate receipts won't do it. Not ever. Rentals for special events, more gift shops, ice cream stands, etc., etc. end up paying for the operational maintenance of the zoo, its collection and staff (zoo keepers used to be very poorly paid, now they are simply not paid well ) Donors are also being hit on by in situ conservation organizations, disease-charities, hunger-charities, and political parties. Their droppings look like little glitterballs.Before anyone starts sprinkling the stuff on their cornflakes, this isn't the hottest new beauty trend nor is it a natural phenomenon: Assiniboine Park Zoo's keepers use coloured glitter in the bears' feed to identify their droppings.Why? Well, scat reveals all sorts of things about individual animals; information the keepers share with the scientific community. Many zoos conduct such studies, and also run captive breeding programmes for endangered species. However, critics say this doesn't justify their existence."Zoos are prisons for animals, camouflaging their cruelty with conservation claims," Mimi Bekhechi, director of international programmes at PETA, explains. "Animals in zoos suffer tremendously, both physically and mentally. They often display neurotic behaviour, like repetitive pacing, swaying, and bar biting. Not surprising, perhaps, considering the typical polar bear enclosure is one million times smaller than the area they would naturally roam."PETA isn't alone. In April, ethical tour operator Responsible Travel — after consultation with wildlife charity Born Free Foundation — axed trips that include zoo visits. It's the first travel company to publicly make such a move."Only 15% of the thousands of species held in zoos are considered 'threatened'," says Will Travers OBE, president of Born Free.
