Folha de São Paulo, a large newspaper that is distributed all over Brazil with 490,000 circulation, has released an analysis from São Paulo University. In Infomática section of August 11, 1999 issue, they especially recruited an expert from an academic field to analyze TRENDnet®'s Web Cruiser products. The tests were conducted by Onofre Trindade, Jr., MsC/PhD, who teaches at numerous universities, including São Paulo University and University of Southampton. Dr. Trindade's product testing categories were Ease of Installation, Ease of Use, Cost/Benefit Ratio, Electromechanical Quality, and Documentation. The evaluation was based on points ranging from the highest of "5" and the lowest of "1." Concerning the Ease of Installation and Cost/Benefit Ratio, the Web Cruiser received "4" and "4.5," respectively. However, it was assessed "5" in both Ease of Use and Electromechanical Quality with the final median score of "4.5." In explaining the analysis Dr. Trinda denoted, "The corresponding software purchase and setup are a complex task that requires expert knowledge of TCP/IP networks and operating systems. However, everything is much simpler with the Web Cruiser. All the programs are built in the equipment permanently. And, the only necessary step is to set up a specific data. " "The Web Cruiser is an equipment that provides cost saving and easy connection to Internet for a small group of users. The equipment is compact and looks like a small Ethernet hub. One of the most interesting details about Web Cruiser operation is the increase of speed when using modems in parallel," concluded Dr. Trindade. Web Cruiser's mundane interface can be scheduled to automatically check for updates as often as every 10 minutes. With that being said, we aren't sure if it actually notifies you immediately as updates occur or if it is reporting when one has occurred within your scheduled notification time. During tests, Web Cruiser only scans the listed sites at the scheduled 10-minute interval, making us iffy of its claims. You can set the application to blink, shake, pop up, and send e-mails regarding updates. Unfortunately, we aren't sure which site is updated since the entire list appears to always be given after a scan, and on top of this the e-mail feature didn't work during our analysis. The program's help link also turns up a page-not-found error message.
